Default low voltage reading

on my ride home yesterday i notuced that the volt meter was reading a little low than normal. sure enough as soon as i pulled down the driveway the bike shut down. would not restart or even attempt to crank over. the battery was completely dead. once i charged up the battery it started fine but the voltage reading is basically 0 what do i look for and what and how do i check the charging system. it's a 1998 ultra classic 1340 efi or do i assume it is just the alternator and get it replaced. could it be the voltage regulator? i am on a new ride again after 23 years in a cage and now that it's down (i've only had it 1 1/2 months) i feel like my world has fallen in on me.

I would look at the voltage regulator and I know that there is a easy way to test, however you need the shop manual for the info and the pigtail harness end too along with multimeter! Good Luck !

Elc stuff is a bitty to find sometimes..
just start with the basics and move up...
start with battery, then cables, ( U'd be supprised how many time the cables bolts are loose... Mine was once causing a miss)!!!!!....
