When going on weekend trips with the wife and her luggage...
"...the bike would be a commuter on nice days, and would be used for the occasional short weekend trips down to the coast, we have a place about 2 hours away in Manzanita, so I am thinking that is about as long a ride as I need for awhile. The wife thinks she might like the occasional ride as well, but that could be accomplished with a 2 up seat?"...
If your wife is anything like my wife a spare T-shirt and a toothbrush does not cut it for weekend trips - even if we were going to someplace like 'our place on the coast'. Heck, especially then, as there is always something that needs to be taken there - groceries, whatever.
My wife needs a certain amount of luggage space. Like about 60% of it. And it isn't always lightweight.
If you want to go on weekend trips with your wife, riding 2 up with somewhere between 30-40 lbs of luggage, you might want to look at something like a Road King. It offers twin disk brakes on the front end, and an adjustable gas suspension system for whenever the bike may be heavier loaded. Its frame and suspension is designed more for riding two up with luggage on longer trips. But for commuting you can strip it down pretty good and have a nice commuter as well.
Its just a thought.
Two others - agree with skootchnc on taking a class. MSN offers good courses, lots of info if you've been away 15 years;
And put a Mustang seat on it - the stock 2 up seat was pronounced "un-liveable" by my lovely bride.
Best with it, and good luck getting back into riding.

Thanks
Great advice guys, i appreciate all replies, especially about women and their luggage, lets just say i totally understand!
You have all given me more to think about than I had originally anticipated so the decision may take awhile longer, once again thanx for the advice and support.

I would most certainly test ride them both. Find out what one fits you best, maybe try a few others see what you are comfortable with and will you be happy with it in six months. Welcome from New Mexico
