Not even an Owner...yet
#22
First I'd like to say welcome. I hope you will get the answers you need. As another Harley rider is need in this world.
Second I will answer as best I can your question about what to buy. This is hard as I am not closely familiar with your finances or your preferences. Between the Softail and a Dyna is about as extreme in both price , feel, and looks as one is going to get; outside of a touring model (baggers). I went with the Dyna because of three stated earlier; price, feel, and looks.
On this site many speculate about what the MoCo (Harley Davidson) should do to increase sales to a younger generation. I believe is should be just what you experienced; fix the sales persons at the dealership. Those are the first people a new potential owner will see. If that is the only dealership close to you get one of them to do there job. I had the same experience at a local dealership. Luckily, I had another dealership 40 minutes up the road and a salesman willing to listen, help, and made the call. The salesmen asked if I had anyone help me at the other dealership. I responded "If you mean giving someone my contact phone number 9 months ago. So they could call me when a Vivid Black Streetbob came in, help. Then I guess they did; in your mind. I saw the bike I was wanting (see above) on the sales floor. I saw the sales person that had my contact information. He decided to turn his eyes away from me so not to make eye contact. But if anyone complains about you (the salesman making the deal) getting this sale. Call me I will meet with the owner personally and set the record straight." Incidentally, since my purchase, I went to that dealership. Parked right in front of the windows were the salesmen have there desks. So that sales person could see what an idiot he was.
With that said do not be discouraged about what you want; as now is the best time to get a Harley. In other words it is a buyers market.
If you see a group of riders, on Harley's, talk to them. If you are truly genuine about owning a H-D, it will show. Those people will answer most of your questions.
Hope you decide to buy a Harley and stay with this forum.
