Welcome to the forum. Thanks for the service, my son just joined the Army. is it possible that you could purchase a cheap used bike any make and try that until you feel comfortable moving to a larger bike? what is a maintainer? I heard of fluffers but very different type of service. Just kidding.

I never really thought of getting a used bike because my other Harley/Buell buddies told me never to buy a used bike because you can never really know what the bike went through with the PO. A maintainer is a mechanic, I don't use the word mechanic because I don't fix anything when something breaks I just replace it with a good part, think of it as a glorified oil change guy. I'm one of the lucky ones who got stuck with a job that I did not want, stupid A.G.E.(Aerospace Ground Equipment)
