In a way, you're right about the "scam". Anything with a bar & shield on it costs about 30% more than it should. That's why people say "H-D" stands for "hundred dollars"--that's what you spend everytime you want something.
If you want to make her REALLY happy and you plan to put some 2 up miles on, put a Mustang touring seat on it. Your new backrests will work and she'll like it MUCH more than the one on the bike. You know what they say--if mama ain't happy, nobody's happy. I ordered Mustang seats, backrests, etc for the new Road Glide even before my bike arrived based on my previous experience.
Check around and you'll see--it's hard to find someone with a Mustang seat who doesn't love it.
