Default Mid-life decision

After living the first 57 years of my life never sitting my fat a-- on a motorcycle, I have been bitten by the bug to ride. I have signed up for the rider safety course and I have been looking and talking with the loca Harley dealer. Right now, my choice is a 883 Low. Do you experienced riders think this is too much bike for me? By the way, I am 6' 1" and 275lbs and don't really want a litle toy scooter. Thanks for any suggestions.

Welcome from central Washington. Great site and even better people. Use the search function and snoop around a bit before asking questions . Just a little brotherly advice. You're a good sized guy, I personally think you may want to consider a Dyna or Softtail. I got back into ridin after 25+ years on a 800#+ Kaw Nomad. Get the course, go slow and build your skill. You'll be fine. Glad you're here . Geezer

Kudos for signing up for a rider safety course. Plenty of folks skip this part.

As for the bike, as the other poster mentioned, I really think you'll be far happier with a different bike. Yes, it's more money but... better to have a bike that fits well which in turn, will make you happier in the long run.

Many folks like the Heritage Softail Classic. Comes with bags and all out of the box. Supposed to be a nice handling bike. Lots of guys and gals ride them. If it's too much $$$, sure finding a gently used one would be easy.

Good luck.

Welcome!

I recently had the same delimma. Hadn't been on a bike in years, but got the bug. I'm 6'2" and 250 lbs.

I took the course and was seriously looking at a Nightster. I went to the dealer and tried one on. I bought a Super Glide Custom.

It's a much better fit and when mama fianlly decides she wants to ride, I think we'll be much more comfortable.

good luck in the course. I did the same last year and had no experience prior to class so you should have no problem. I went out and bought a 2006 Fatboy afterwards and I'm glad I didn't get anything smaller. I suggest that you look them over and you'll know when you've found the model you like the best.

good luck and remember to share photos when you get your bike.
