Welcome from Ottawa! Where are you in Québec?
I've had my Softail Heritage since last May and I can ride for hours without getting tired. I've never tried the V-Rod. I would recommend renting one. They rent in Ottawa .

VROD's are really great bikes, have not ridden one so can't offer any advise on the versatility of long distance riding. I think the recommendation of renting one is a great idea.
Welcome to the Forum from New York you will find lots of great information and advise here, best of luck with your decision.

What ever you choose, it probably wont be your last bike. If you want long haul, then buy a long haul bike. If you want speed and HP then get a bike that makes high RPM. I would think the high RPMs alone would fatigue you on a long haul.
THe softail is really not the best haul bike either- touring frame bikes are made for touring and the Road King is a pretty nimble ride for an 800 lb bike. THe softtail might be a good comprimise?
Good luck on your search and WELCOME fomr Missouri.
