Default Thinking about buying a Harley

After going to my first Biketoberfest in Daytona last year, I am hooked on the Harley/Cruiser culture and have decided to purchase one. So I just joined this forum to learn more about them before I make a purchase.

I have decided to find either a 1975 (My birthyear) superglide or custom sportster. Any thoughts on those models?

i cant speak too much for the older bikes, but there seems to be a lot of parts available for the 92 to 03 bikes. most of those years the parts will interchange, making them a little less expensive to buy. at the shop where i hang out they work on a lot of older sportsters, and finding parts is a real problem. what ever you decide.....lots of luck and enjoyment with it!!

Welcome to the party! Any bike with the words Harley-Davidson on the side of the tank is worth it in my opinion. You'll find lots of good tips and advise and plenty of stories and stuff here to help ya out. This place has THE best group of people you'll find anywhere.

I would buy a new harley a turn it into your b-day bike. That is what my goal is..... I was looking for a 54 Panny but decided on purchasing a springer deluxe, changing the rocker boxes, putting on a solo seat, having bags customed made, etc. That way I have a drivable bike with all the new technology. Just my thoughts.

Glad you found us. When you said "cruiser", I was thinking you meant more along the lines of a Road King or an Eltra Glide. The older bikes are going to require a little more TLC, not sure how much of a wrench you are, so that is certainly something to consider.

Hope you find what you're lookig for here, we've got plenty of opinions to offer!

I would recommend building my own bike. An older bike like that you will more than likely be rebuilding from the ground up anyway. With the new one, you will have better options. Its all just money. Welcome to the forum, enjoy.

Hello and welcome to the site SKJOLD.

It's all about what you want and what you can afford. Some good points made already as to the new technology and your willingness to to wrench.
Check out the transformation I did with with my 1978 XL 1000 Sportster. Just click the link in my signature. I too had a specific idea of what I wanted and went for it, and am pleased with the results. I started with a mechanically sound old bike and turned into my bike.

Surprisingly, parts are available for the older stuff. You just need to find them.

Good luck with whatever you choose, and feel free to ask any questions you like. We're all here to help if we can.

Two considerations: What do you want---What can you afford, after that you are only limited by your imagination
