Default 1st HD/BIKE , good idea?

Hey,

So I just started my job (2nd LT, army) and&nbsp\\;can finally afford to buy a bike, after being poor through college. My commander rides and gave me some basic lessons on his bike, and he recommended I get a Sportster.&nbsp\\;I don't have much riding experience, and I have the bike I think I want lined up (an 883 Custom).

I am not&nbsp\\;going to ride anything on my own until I complete the MSF class I have coming up in two weeks. Do you think a Sportster 883 is a decent starting bike. I would only be riding it on back roads around here at first which are pretty barren as it has a lot of farm areas and not very dense population wise.

I am just unsure if the engine would be too powerful, for reference I am 5' 9" and 200lbs.

Let me know what you think,
Chris

Howdy from Ten-O-C! If you can find a good used Sportster at a good price,it will probably serve you well. Chances are you will out grow it in a year or so and want something bigger.
Good luck and enjoy what ever you get. Be safe!

Hi Chri,
much as a I love te Sportsters, I would not get an 883. Go for the 1200 straight away as this bit more cc's will provide a lot more fun.
Otherwise, do not believe any recommendations from anybody, go out and make test rides and after that decide for yourself.
Ride on and have fun!

Thanks for your service, and welcome from South Texas! Look around, go to the dealer and sit on a few, take your time and find the one that best suits you!
