generator shovel electrical problem
hi,
i recently rewired my '69 electraglide flh. it had a short somewhere in the charging system...the generator light was on and the battery would drain...plus the wiring was original and very trashed. i bought an aftermarket harness and rewired it according to the 68-69 wiring diagram, but it won't start now. i hear a click every 10 seconds or so in either the starter relay or regulator or both. the extent of my progress is that the taillight will come on when i have the switch on accessory. nothing else works. i've replaced starter relay, regulator, coil, and overload circuit breaker. after i rewired it and turned it on, there was a smell in the area of the regulator. an electrical 'something's burning' kind of smell. i've connected the tester light clip to the positive terminal of the battery and touched one of the terminals on the starter relay and the bike will crank strong, so i think battery and starter motor are good...but the juice is not flowing to the right places at the right times. there was a lot of mickey mouse wiring on this bike when i got it, ie masking tape, greasy frayed wires. other than that i believe the bike to be at least 95% orininal. perhaps someone can help? i think it might be somewhere in the dash area (ignition switch, and dash terminals 7 and 8). as i'm not an experienced mechanic or electrician, it is frustrating. i'm convinced it is a simple problem, and that someone who knows what he's doing could deal with this in 10 minutes. i am a novice however. i would appreciate any help from anyone, especially someone knowledgeable in the 66-69 generator shovels.
thanks,
edog
