RE: Indiana Native here!
Thanks Skip. I am sure they appreciated your comments more than you know. I had something happen to me once. Kind of a long story, but an important one, so forgive the length. My wife and I were dining one night in Yuma (AZ) and I noticed an elderly man and woman sitting next to us. I was wearing a "USMC Retired) hat and the man said "I was a Marine once." I asked when he was in and he got a far away look (thousand yard stare?) and said 1941-1945. I realized I was looking at a real life hero. He went on to say that he had been wounded on Iwo Jima and the lady sitting next to him had been the navy nurse that had taken care of him on the hospital ship. They had been married since the end of the war. I realized that I enjoyed the life I have because of the sacrafices that they both, and many like them, had made. I had a Marine Corps key ring in my pocket. It read on the back "Uncommon Valor Was A Common Virtue." Those words had been spoken by a Navy Admiral after the battle at Iwo Jima in tribute to those who fought there. I took that key ring, handed it to that Marine and told him he earned it more than I did. With tears in his eyes, he thanked me. He told me that no one had thanked him for his service in many, many years. I assured him that many of us remember. So, to all the past, present and future veterans, thank you for giving of yourself so that others may live free. Semper Fidelis.
