Yea so I知 Brad. I知 gonna be apart of the forums here on out. Probably a lot of questions. Anyways got a whine out of cam case. Was on way to take to dealership where I purchased 2 weeks ago at 31k on miles and well 500 miles later this thing went from whine to metal. She was shut off and roadside called. I am trying to get dealer to fix it as Harley recommends it痴 changed at 30k fingers crossed.
but if not I found a kit on eBay. It痴 on cheaper side. Does anyone have any thoughts on the parts on there cheaper I mean like 20 less then the ones on JP CYCLES
TIA

Welcome to the HDForums and hope
you enjoy your ride with us ______
Harley official never recommend a change. Common sense says to inspect at 30k to check for wear. Then using that for next check The back one one must just eyeball to make sure linkpins of chain are not touching.
Riding habits determine a lot. Ridding at 3k and not racing red light to red light and they go well over 50k.
Replace ever 10 years do to the delrin material getting hard from hot oil bath however.
There is no upgrade that makes echonomicial sense. Roller chain fixes it since they stop wearing after the chain wears in till it rolls. Still need 10 year fix.
To go to roller on back requires cam change. That or gear drive but big bucks for a 04 make no sense.
Sounds like it was broke when you bought it.
Best fix is some new gaskets, Harley's shoes. It's best to get a true oil pressure reading before pulling cam cover. However with a service manual, you can inspect it for end play wear. Replace o-ring in it.
Inspect needle bearings on end of cam shafts in case
It not a big job but it is a highly skilled job that most novice don't have that requires a few special tools and a OEM service manual.
If cam bearings are replaced, it requires skill to get ALL of them out. Oil pump needs to be carefully aligned. Harley did not dowel pin it. (Why I never have quite figured out)
Enough YouTube and you have done internal motor work and you can probably do it. How I learned. I have overhauled quite a few car and truck motors since the 70s.
Be sure to post all other questions and new posts using hamburger drop-down menu for proper area.

Welcome from Spartan Country, Michigan!
I tell a lot of new comers to the forum to get: Factory Service manual and the Parts manual. Get a three ring binder and record all your maintenance, repairs, accessories, etc. This will be a great reminder of what was done when. And great material to pass along to the new owner should you sell and upgrade. Also know how large your fuel tank is, a rough idea of your range per tank, and record your fuel usage. I have an app called Simply Auto that I record all my fuel used. I use the odometer and use the fuel gage as reference only. I reset the odometer to zero on fill ups, and I know I can safely get 200 miles on a tank on around town riding, and upwards of 230+ on trips.

Welcome to the forum. Hope you don't have any damage to the motor. This isn't the place to discuss tech issues, but I'm in the middle of cam shoe change on my 2001 RK with 30K miles. Here's what I'm doing, hope this helps. My shoes were worn, but not coming apart. Cams, lifters, etc all in good shape. Doing the work myself, "book method" removing rocker arms. You can also cut pushrods so you don't have to remove top end stuff.
Cam service gasket kit from dealer. Includes all gaskets, Orings, breather parts etc. (plus cam bearings if you want to change them using original style) $130. Torrington 148 inner cam bearings $17. Tensioner shoes and tool from Cyco $67. (you don't really need the tool, but without it you don't get free shipping) Outer chain tension release tool and cam sprockets lock tool $30. Inner chain tension release tool, homemade $0. Inner cam bearing puller/installer $158. (there are cheaper, but they made me nervous) Rockouts $16. Oil pump align tools $15. Total parts/tools $433. I wanted to get the LMR-2 oil pump spring but nobody seems to have them. Good luck!
