New to Harleys
I rode dirtbikes, quads and Japanese streetbikes quite a bit until I got married 21 years ago. Gave it up and just worked to support my wife and two children, and most of the time we couldn't afford extras like expensive toys and vacations. My 16 year-old son died last month, hit by a car on his bicycle in front of our house. When my daughter returns to college this month, my wife and I will be alone for the first time in 20 years.
I've had a powerful urge to get back on a bike, partly to help distract me from thinking about my son. My buddy has a '90's vintage Sportster which I've ridden occasionally and I'm hooked on the v-twin. My friend warns me that a Sportster is not the best bike for 2-up riding, and that I'd be better off with a UJM. I think he doesn't want me looking as sharp as he does. I'm looking at a really nice '06 883, but I'm concerned about his comment.
Any thoughts?
Charley

RE: New to Harleys
Welcome! And, our genuine heartfelt sympathy for your loss. May you experience some great times riding that will help with the pain and keep the special memories ever fresh.
Having just "transitioned" from an '05 1200C Sportster to a Road King, I can report without reservation that the Sportster is definitely not the best for 2-up riding. Around town, at lower speeds and not-too-long on the bike can be fun and reasonably comfortable on the Sportster, but there are significant limits...expecially for us "aging riders". My 2Cis to find a good touring HD to begin with -- don't waste time/$$ with a Sporty (Although they're great in their own way!), take a safety course to get back into riding the right way, gain some experience on the bike and hit the road for the two of you to have some well deserved fun!
