FNOG - Freakin' New Old Guy
After riding around the past 32 or so years on everything from 400cc UJMs to sportbikes to dirtbikes and even metric cruisers, I finally purchased my first Harley. I was getting the jones for a Sportster, since I had never owned an air-cooled V-twin before, and I was thinking that a used 883 and some cafe-styled parts would be just the ticket for my upcoming midlife crisis. One sunny Saturday about a month ago, I stopped by the local HD dealer to see what they had on the lot. Sitting in the row of used (sorry, "pre-owned") bikes was a Sporty 72. When the sales wizard pointed it out, I chuckled and told him it wasn't my style.
"You see, it's those mini-apes, and the forward controls, and the 21 inch front hoop. Not my thing. I really just want to look at an Iron 883. Used. As close to stock as you got."
He said, "Yeah, we have a bunch of them. You can buy them all day long." He leaned in and whispered, "You really should take the 72 out for a demo ride. We've only have one. If you hate it, you hate it. Then I'll put you on an 883."
Long story short, I wrote a check for the bike that afternoon. 2016, Black Denim, just a tick over 2000 miles, still under factory warranty. Everything is stock except for the V&H Short Shots (which are so stupid loud I can't ride the bike around the neighborhood without setting off car alarms). People love this thing. I can't park it anywhere without someone wanting to talk about it. The 72 reminds me of everything I loved about bikes when I first started riding - it's raw and brash and a little impractical, but it's also a ton of fun.
I smile every time I ride it. Really.
