New guy
I'm a crusty old man. I've been riding since... must be 1965. I've been riding a 1998 XHL1200 Sportster for about 10 years. This spring I fell in love with (and bought) a 2002 Deuce -- and I have not been able to let the Sporty go. I live in southeastern Wisconsin, and I've become mostly a fair weather rider. My longest rides were years ago -- Champaign IL to Montreal, and Champaign to San Diego. I'm planning to ride around Lake Superior next spring. If that goes well, I plan to celebrate turning 70 the following year (2019) by again riding Highway 1 from Carmel to LA. Although I've done a lot of 'wrenching' over the years -- complete tear-downs, pistons, mains, whatever -- these days I'm pretty happy to let someone else do it. (Though I did pull the front head off the Sporty a couple of years ago to replace a slipped valve guide. Who the hell invented shoulderless valve guides?) As I shuffle into my dotage, I've committed to always wearing full gear; I don't heal as quickly as I used to. I've also committed to keeping my body off the pavement, but there's only so much a guy can do about that. My two worst wrecks were when cars pulled out in front of me. I'm pretty vigilant about that sort of thing now. I also have the luxury of mostly avoiding cities, since I live in the boondocks, and don't commute (self employed, work at home). I often take off and ride 30-40-50 miles on local country roads, for the sheer joy of riding that Deuce with no place I have to be.
I'll have some dumb questions; I hope I can get some great support here!
