Newby Needs Help w/Fair Market Value on Two Bikes
OK, what is the best way to know how much I should pay for a used bike? Is there a blue book that is viewed as authoritative for Harleys or do most people just go off of gut or a high level of nationwide or local research?
Here's what I'm looking at:
2003 V-Rod, 100th Anniversary Ed.
Very little mods
<1000 miles
How much is it worth? My neighbor says he'd consider selling it but hasnt mentioned a price. He thinks it's a collectors item. From what I can tell, it's probably worth about $9500.
2008 VRSC Night Rod
Very little mods but does have security system
650 miles
He's asking $14k but I don't know what it's worth or what I should expect to pay.
Any thoughts?

2003 VRod trade in value about $7000 (Its only a collector item if someone actually collected it and sat on it 20-30 years) otherwise its just color and badges.
2008 Vrod night depending on whether its the special or not around $9500
Look at Ebay, see what the going prices are, take a run to your local dealer but Im betting your friend is in for a surprise, his bikes aren't worth near what he thinks.
Offer him $7000 for the 03 or $9500 for the 08, your being fair. if he really wants to sell then it works out for both, if not keep looking. You'll find a deal just take your time looking.

So why would I use trade in value over retail value? It seems like if I'm buying or selling it as a private party, I should use retail value. Ofcourse as a buyer I'd rather pay trade in value but that' the price the Harley deal would pay for the same bike.
I did retail value on both bikes and here's what I got.
V-Rod Night Rod Special (it is a special): $14325
V-Rod: $9565

Maybe a call to your insurance person and ask what they would pay on a total loss on the models your looking at will also help narrow the price range.
Good Luck whatever you decide.....
Just my 2 cents....mps

If you have cash in hand and want to help a friend, pay what you think is fair. If you will be financing, the bank won't look past low retail - in my experience mileage and condition do not matter on used bikes.
The dx is about 2k over priced - add 1k and you can buy a new 09 right now.
