I have been told that the only good it does is make the rear end look good. In fact, I was told that "Anything over 200 makes the bike handle like a dump truck through turns", meaning it's stubborn and has to be forced to turn. I don't know if that is true or not, but I place enough stock in the words of the guy that told me that opinion that when my rear wears out, I am going back with a Metzeler ME880 200/50VR-18. Let us know if you hear or experience anything different.

Wider tires are not good handlers. Look at the rear on the road kings. HD road kings have grown up over may decades of riding and design changes..... and what do ya know, they have a skinny tire on them - for the ride (including cornering).
A wide tire changes the riding height of the bike as it corners as well as the alignement of the front tire's rubber on the road versus the back tire's. In general, it screwes up what could be better handling. They look cool and may give you a little more grip on a burnout (I might question this as well) but they arn't worth a flip for handling.
