12% power increase??? Woooooowwww, that might definitely be the ticket for $30 or whatever. But what will they do under a torque cam with a carb? From easy hypermiling to sudden WOT passes?
Now, with all that going for us, how is a set of plugs warranteed? Do we have to go to a shop dyno and let some half stoned dropout rev our engines into areas they've never seen before, or will the butt dyno be good enough? If I say they don't do any better, it means just that; I check my mileage every tank fillup and know what she does consistently. I know intimately how she pulls hills, my trailer, and WOT. I know each mileage, loaded or empty, town or country.
These don't work, then I'd want my bucks back and put the iridiums back in
Do WHAT??? Hanged if I could afford $25 a plug for my v8 Chevy! I'm having trouble justifying it for even the bike!
Here is how it works & what Pulstar is doing. 1st it is a larger spark (with more surface area not more heat) ex pen light VS camera flash or light bulb VS LED light. Pulstar is NOT burning more fuel... it is burning the exact same amount of fuel , quicker (velocity speed is increased up to 60%). There is only so much heat/energy stored in the fuel charge. By releasing that stored energy quicker/more efficiently. More energy/power can be extracted from the fuel charge, and transferred to the crank shaft as HP & Low End Torque. It is called a"Pulse Plug", because NO Spark-Plug can create a spark with more power than a maximum of 50watts, and because it is based on the proven science of "Pulsed Power".

Pulsed power

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Pulsed power is the science and technology of accumulating energy over a relatively long period of time and releasing it very quickly, thus increasing the instantaneous power.
Contents

Overview

Steady accumulation of energy followed by its rapid release can result in the delivery of a larger amount of instantaneous power over a shorter period of time (although the total energy is the same). Energy is typically stored within electrostatic fields (capacitors), magnetic fields (inductor), as mechanical energy (using large flywheels connected to special purpose high current alternators), or as chemical energy (high-current lead-acid batteries, or explosives). By releasing the stored energy over a very short interval (a process that is called energy compression), a huge amount of peak power can be delivered to a load. For example, if one joule of energy is stored within a capacitor and then evenly released to a load over one second, the peak power delivered to the load would only be 1 watt. However, if all of the stored energy were released within one microsecond, the peak power would be one megawatt, a million times greater. Examples where pulsed power technology is commonly used include radar, particle accelerators, ultrastrong magnetic fields, fusion research, electromagnetic pulses, and high power pulsed lasers.
History

Pulsed Power was first developed during World War II for use in Radar. Radar requires short high power pulses. After the war development continued in other applications leading to the super pulsed power machines at Sandia National Laboratories.

WARNINGS:
  • Do NOT use “Nology Hot Wires” with Pulstar® Pulse Plugs, They are not compatable together!
  • Do NOT Drop your Pulstar® Pulse Plugs! Installing a dropped pulse plug can result in poor driving performance and possible engine damage.
Pulstar® Pulse Plugs are NOT Spark-plugs, they are a direct replacement part for Spark-plugs. On a carbureted engine they are plug-and-play. If you have an injected engine, the computer must learn the Pulstar® technology is burning the fuel quicker. This may take 20-40 miles or a couple tanks of gas, depending on the year, make, and model of your vehicle.
You can speed this process up by disconnecting the ground wire at the battery for 10-15 minutes. When you reconnect the ground wire and start the engine, the computer will go into diagnostic mode . This is because the computers job is to play Simon-says with the engine, so to speak. This means it will not allow the engine to perform differently until it collects some data first. It will do this by getting feed back from several sensors on the engine, the oxygen sensor, the knock sensor, etc. Once this has happened, you will begin to feel more power.
If you are interested in better fuel economy, allow several tanks of gas for the computer to optimize the fuel economy. You will not need to Remap your engines computer.
Please follow the following instructions:
  • Pulstar® Pulse Plugs are NOT pre-gapped for your vehicle.
  • Set the Gap of your Pulstar® Pulse Plugs to the gap recommended in your owners manual.
  • For ALL turbo engines, set the gap of your Pulstar® Pulse Plugs to .025″.
Instructions:

  1. To set your gap, use the factory recommended gap for your engine. Do NOT exceed .055″ (1.45mm).
  2. Prior to attaching the wires or coil, apply dielectric grease around the ceramic insulator at the terminal end of the plug to promote a quality electrical connection.
  3. Install plugs finger tight. You can accomplish this by using a 3/8″ hose, a spark plug threading tool to get the plugs started in the head or just use your hand.
  4. Torque plugs using a 5/8″ (16mm) deep socket without a spark plug rubber insert.
  5. Tighten Pulstar® pulse plugs to the vehicle’s factory recommended torque specification.
On most computer-controlled vehicles, allow at least one tank of gas for the computer to learn the characteristics of the new plugs. You can speed up the learning process by disconnecting the negative battery terminal during installation. Remember to reconnect the terminal before attempting to start your motorcycle or automobile.
Allow 2-3 tanks of gas for the computer to opptimize fuel economy (when you are riding normal, and going the speed limit).
Caution: DO NOT use this (ramp style ) tool to gap Pulstar® Pulse Plugs. You risk the chance of damaging the electrode.

Using an Ullman Gap Tool (shown on left) can cause damage to the electrode. Instead, use a feeler gauge to adjust your gap setting (shown at Center and at Right). Use the small divit at the end of the adjuster to bend the ground strap using leverage from the tool. Your gap tool should NEVER touch the electrode on the top of the Pulstar Pulse Plug (see diagrams below for Ground Strap and Electrode). Set your gap settings to the factory recommended gap for your engine. Do not exceed .055″ (1.45mm).
You can purchase a feeler gage plug gapping tool at your local auto parts store. Use the flat sheet of steel to adjust the Ground Strap (see left of pic) by increasing or decreasing the gap between the Electrode and the Ground Strap.
Use the feeler gages to check the gap until the desired gap is reached. The gap is correct when you feel a slight drag between the Ground Strap, the feeler gage, and the Electrode…without forcing it or binding.
You should remove your Pulstar® Pulse Plugs, check and adjust the gap as needed ever 50,000 miles so the gap remains within factory specks.

Correct Gapping Testing the gap with the feeler gauge. Example of using leverage without touching the electrode. Correct placement to adjust the gap between the electrode and ground strap. Never touch the electrode when adjusting! Use the leverage from the gap tool wedged with the ground strap to adjust the gap. Iridium Electrode gaping cautions:
  • Iridium is a precious metal that is 6 times harder and 8 times stronger than Platinum (in many cases the harder the metal is the more brittle it becomes, this is the reason, no pressure of any kind should ever be applied to the Iridium Electrode tip).
  • Iridium has a 1,200°(F) higher melting point than platinum and conducts electricity better.
  • Iridium is a super dense material and therefore extremely resistant to wear.

If you have any questions you are more than welcome to give me a call, my friend. Thank you for your time and interest.

By the way, you had some very good questions & I can understand your concerns completely. I do not work for Pulstar I am an Authorized Distributor of their products... I had some of the same concerns, about the product almost 2 years ago. Thanks, for asking, my friend.

But what will they do under a torque cam with a carb? From easy hypermiling to sudden WOT passes?

Sorry Idid not answer this question.you will be just fine. The more you have done to the engine... the more power you will get!

I have a 1996 Dyna 96" S&S engine... EV59 Cam, Mikuni 42mm HRS Carb. (Yost power tube kit), Crane single fire ignition system, D&D 2-1 Fat Cat Exhaust, K&N open air cleaner, Ported & polished heads. Was running Champion plugs... installed Pulstar & was blown away by power gain! Got involved with Pulstar the next week!

Okay, I changed my mind after a friend who manages an Advance store managed to get me a set for $25.
I was riding with my wife all day and I changed the plugs in the parking lot, since they already had the right gap.
I coulnd't tell diddly squat with her on the back, so dropped her off.
Improvement #1 - bike now starts hot without enrichener pulled or a twist of the acclerator pump; I just hit the button. Gas saved.
Improvement #2 - I hit my local twisty loop that has a few good boardscraping curves, some 1st & 2nd gear work. The bike seems to bull out just a little bit better at low revs but not so much I can dismiss imagination. The cams already have her pulling great, so it's hard to tell. Will see how she does cold tomorrow.
I fueled up before the test and hit 38 mpg mixed riding and will mix it up again on this tank and see how she does.

I installed a set last week. Was able to ride one day before screwing up my shoulder to the point of not being able to raise my arm, so no riding this past week.

First off, the bike starts easier. Might be my imagination or the ECM needing to adjust to the plugs but the bike seemed to lug from a stop, I never noticed this before. I don't have many miles on these and from what I've read I'll probably need a few tanks of gas run before i notice a change.

I'll be back to riding hopefully before the weekend so I'll post more once I have some more miles on them.

Be sure they are gaped around .040" ( HD says between .038"-.042") it is very rare for both plugs to be set at .040" out of the box. Did you get he1it (Twin Cam) be1it (EVO)? If there is not a "T" (Power Sports) at the end of the part number you got auto plugs (he1i or be1i/ be1p)! No one is allowed to advertise $25.00 for 2- Power Sports plugs. The difference is the Warranty (Void if Auto installed in a Power Sports application). They will not harm anything.

The bike should not be lugging, did you follow these steps.

Why is the fit of the terminal at the top of the insulator important?
With any spark plug a good, tight fit of the terminal connect is important to prevent loss of energy transfer at the connection. For Pulstar® pulse plugs it is also critical to provide the energy will be stored in the capacitor before the spark is formed at the plug tip. If the terminal connection is not tight, energy which is normally stored for the efficient burning of the fuel mixture is lost.
Why use dielectric grease on the top ceramic insulator?
One of the normal effects of operating a high voltage electrical system (like the ignition system on your vehicle) is the formation of a "corona voltage" on the external surface of the conductor (wires or insulators). As the voltage increases (as it does when a spark plug gets older and the gap wears larger), this "corona voltage" will increase. By using dielectric grease on the top ceramic insulator and lower edge of the wire or coil boot, this corona voltage is reduced and the plug will last longer before needing replacement.

After installing the plugs in an injected motorcycle (please ride the bike about 20 miles in the city & 20 miles on the highway for the computer to recognize the characteristics of the new plugs) carb is plug & play. At this point you should start to feel more power, torque & a more responsive throttle. Allow 2-3 tanks of fuel for the computer to optimize fuel economy (when you are riding normal/doing the speed limit).

Your bike should not run poor at all after installing the pulstar plugs. The reason is the computer (ECM) will make the engine perform the way it did with spark-plugs (this is what it knows) until it learns, that Pulstar is burning the fuel quicker. if you need to please give me a call on my cell phone, if you need to or have any questions 214 535-2136. Thanks, my friend.

Cool deal, thanks for the feed back. keep us informed.

I have the right plugs. I got a deal from a connection. Ya gotta know people! (especially if you ride with them)

Cool Deal Bro. It's all about who you know. Advance has had Pulstar on the shelf for about 2 years now! The auto line has been out for 5 years now. They have payed for them selves (production cost) so they are have came down in price... Iridium around $12.95 each (NGK Lazar Iridium about $12.99 each) platinum around $9.95 each. Life-Time Warranty!
