Default 01 Softail Deuce FI: hesitation accelerating / wont start sometimes

Hello All -

I got my first HD and it ran great the first week or so - then I started having intermittent issues when accelerating, hasn't happened at idle.

The engine will miss a beat every few seconds like its starved for fuel, and once in a while wont start at all (cold and warmed up). after a while of trying it eventually starts.
  • battery voltage when off is 12.6
  • I cleaned plugs, they weren't very dirty.
  • two tanks of gas from different places, both premium - still halfway through the second tank
possibly bad gas? would that stop it from starting intermittently?

Appreciate any help I can get.

2001 Softail Deuce w/ big bore kit.

Do a search on cleaning the IAC; starting intermittenly is a symptom. Big Bore kit? Could there have been other upgrades like headwork and/or cams? Was the bike dyno tuned after the kit was installed?

from previous owner: "big bore kit, gear drive cams, flowed heads with oversized valves." Bike also has a tuned power commander 5.

Thanks for the response, I will check into cleaning the IAC.

My 2001 goes through coils. Have you checked spark? First coil was intermittent, second just dind't start with bad spark.

2001 was first year of delphi. When was last time filter was changed? Is tank full, possible bad hoses. But I would also check spark. Cleaning IAC is free. For me it manifests itself in stalls when coasting to stop.

I'd be checking the hose in the tank, they are known to leak. You can get filter and hose on ebay cheap.
just checked not so cheap anymore.

The OP did not mention mileage. I would also be checking fuel pressure.

Mileage is 23,000.

I am working on getting to the IAC for cleaning but I can't seem to figure out how to get this cover off without removing the gas tank.

air filter bolts

2001 softail should be Delphi. I usually clean the IAC port
Take air cleaner off, about 11 o clock a port. I spray sensor cleaner in as I cycle kill switch and power, hear a little motor. Put paper towels in throat. May be hard to start for little bit

also wanted to add, I watched a video to see what the reading should be between plugs on the coil pack and mine seem to be low, it says this should be around 11?

can anyone confirm?
