While the tech has the cam chest open, he could send you a picture and you could post it.

Just what do you want to do? If you can't reach to previous owner, you are dealing with a 19 year old bike. Have you heard it run? If you don't hear any strange noise and you like the bike, I'd buy it. That's my 2cents opinion.
Roger that. No unusual noise. I test drive it and it runs great really. I mean little color discoloration on the pipes but I think they took the baffles out and maybe it could use a tune or pipes sometimes just do that I guess.

And then "gee it looks like you need an oil pump as well"! Personally I wouldn't do it but I'm mechanically inclined and have the tools.
Yeah I keep seeing guys getting into bearing and pumps while they're in there. Im not trying to do all that. Im capable other than a few specialty tools of doing the job. Im just concerned about pieces of these dang pads up in the engine or some sites I went to showed damn metal chuck coming out seemingly due to this. I guess that's where they just kept driving it with tensioners gone and the oil flow plugged blowing the engine. IDK Im definitely no mechanic but I tinker.

I would not have the dealer who is selling you the bike inspect it. I sure would not pay them to. I would buy it if paying cash. The. Ride it to an independent shop that works on Harleys and has a great reputation. I have the independent shop go ahead and replace cam shoes and inner and outer bearings. This way you’ll have piece of mind to ride many miles.

just make darn sure your getting a good deal. Dealers have several fees that make buying new or used ridiculously inflated. If your buying from a dealer because you need to finance, I encourage you to save cash and shop private individuals along with the help of someone who knows the models your interested in.

you can pick up used EVO’s low miles for well under 8K in mint condition if your patient.

One thing I learned about "Sales" when I was a teenager in HS selling Kirby Vaccum Cleaners. If the customer wants it then they want it. And some can be obsessed with getting it.

My Sales Manager was trying to be smart and show everyone at a meeting all about "Sales". He chose me for a demo and said "Sell me something." I asked him what he'd like me to sell him and he looked around and said "That ashtray right there". I said "This should be easy since you already want it!" Boom, top of the class that day!

As in I’m talking myself out of it or maybe nothing will meet my standard so I’ll be unhappy either way?

lol yeah I get that. I do love the look of this bike and I am kinda obsessed with getting a Harley.

Luckily I’m poor ….lmao and no bike can change that. If I knew the tensioners weren’t flying apart in there and potentially gonna cost me an engine upon taking possession of the bike, I say I’ll handle anything within reason that needs to be done. The cam thing just makes me nervous and I thought while I don’t technically own the thing yet I’ll have them check it.

the bike seems to run fine and miles aren’t way up there so surely they may be worn but not at risk of engine failure. It’ll be a good job for me and the ole girl to get to know one another I guess 😊

Dude you gotta shop in mind that '98-06 models may have a bad tensioner and pay accordingly, regardless of what the dealer says I'd plan on opening it up and inspecting or replacing it.

Your search should start with at least the 2009 models ... Many improvements over the pre 2009 models

Most dealers will give you a 30 day or a 1000 mile (or possibly more) warranty. If not walk. Yes, well ride the **** off your new bike over to an independent shop to have them take a look at it. Checks out your good, if not, bring it back for a fix.
