If all you did was pull out the rubber and never had any metal to grab onto then you may be correct. You didn't post any pics of your progress. Looking at the original pic (1) it looks like it was installed correctly just a little deep. The one that I removed was deep also. If you look at the second pic (my seal removed)) you can see where some of the seal was straighten out.. It kind of looks like your final picture (3). I'm guessing what you see inside of your pic (3) is the needle bearing case. Don't mess with that.. At this point I'd say you have to pull the tranny to slide the mainshaft out.. You can probably get behind the seal and pry it out.

It is possible that someone glued the current seal in there with some sort of sealer or bearing lock.. I used hi temp silicone but typically use a little grease. They fit tight enough that they don't go anywhere even with the grease.

Transmission stays in the frame.

Following the service manual, you will:

Remove the transmission top cover, and right side cover.
Remove shift drum, shifter fork shaft and forks.
Remove trap door bolts and remove trap door/gearset (trap door and gearset will come out as an assembly).

Make sure the area is clean. If you wash it with break clean, dribble a little oil on there. Make sure needle bearing cup ain't bent. Once back together let it idle on the side stand for a minute.

Now that I have everything off .. I will observe a day of rest tomorrow and put everything back together Monday.. I was just going to tap that 5th gear gasket back in with a flat washer and a piece of pipe... But after what it put me through im going to buy the Jim's tool and set it right..

Ok scratch that jims tool idea...I don't suppose anyone has one and can tell me the specs I'm pretty sure I can whip one up out of pvc or some 1inch pipe

I have one of those NG .. It is fine for the big seal but I could not get it behind the OIL SEAL MAINSHAFT FIFTH GEAR. It was set to far back.

did you end up taking the transmission out to remove what’s left of the seal or get it out with something else? Kinda in the same spot would rather not pull the trans if I don’t have to
