Default 103 upgrade

2013 FXDF is in for a top end rebuild. Warranty work covers the work to get it as is… stage 3 kit 27544-10a with se 259e cams and high compression pistons. I was going to change the cams while they were doing work but they will charge for labor since not in there. I can keep the 259e cams and they can re bore the cylinders and new pistons and rings. Basically it would be the same. I can have them do that and pay for new cams which were roughly $700 plus labor which includes the entire kit (thinking tw-777). Or I can re bore the cylinders to a 107, new pistons and rings, and pay the difference in the price for the 107 kit.

which way would you go? Keep it the 103 with the se 259e cams and high compression pistons, keep the 103 and change the cams to tw 777 or go for the 103 to 107 upgrade? Not sure if the added performance will be worth the money. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Where are you paying $700 just for the cams? Little steep..
Should be like half that.

I know the SE cams are dissed by many but, from what I have read and seen on dyno charts, the 259E is not that bad. Depending on current CCP with the high compression pistons, there could be a compression issue since the TW777 has a 5* earlier intake close; not sure, haven't checked that out.

If funds are available, I think they would be better spent on head work; an option the OP has not presented. Keep the 103 and 259E cams but have the heads ported and a new dyno tune.

Talking to the guys doing the work they said I would not notice a significant difference in the cam change. Going with the 107 upgrade kit with high compression pistons. Thanks for the input.

Not sure where compression was but pushing that while going to 107 will help some mainly in the lower rpms off cam power.
Better flowing heads would've been the best overall bump in power tho.
Don't let them talk you into settling for a corrected compression of anything less than 200psi in the name of saving your engine tho.

I think what Gunner meant to say CCP of anything less than 200psi instead of corrected compression. If I am wrong, I am sure Gunner will correct me.

If you're going the 107 route, the SE 259 cams would be a pretty good performer if you gave it 10.75 Compression, assuming you were thinking about reusing those cams. Out of the SE cams those get some hate, but mostly because people slap them in with a kit that doesnt have enough Comp to support it. They really need at least 10.6-10.8 to shine. Are there better options out there....? sure but a well set up 259 is nothing to laugh at.
