Those have been modified- the original baffle has been removed- they took a 1.875" hole saw and drilled through the weld holding the baffle in place, then pulled the baffle out. Very common practice years ago. You can source an unmolested set of mufflers from swap meets or ebay, part number 65413-00, need 2.

Not a monk, Cap, LOL Red flannel shirt w/longsleeve T under. It's starting to get chilly here in NH. Winter is not my favorite season for obvious reasons, although I enjoy a few snowshoe hikes. I'd rather be riding. We had a snowmobile when we were kids, but I don't have any desire for one now. There were snow squalls here last night, so I may head out in the truck to scout the roads for salt. Ugh. The bike may be done for the year.

I was in the same boat you're in with a set of pretty rare FXRD mufflers. One of the mufflers had the disk punched out and the other was left stock. To salvage the punched out muffler, I experimented by putting a series ever increasing sized sockets down into the intake side of the muffler on an extension until I had one that just fit and one that just wouldn't fit (Standard and Metric). I then took the one that just fit to the hardware store and bought a washer that was just a hair larger than the socket. I welded up the center of the washer to where it was just a flat disk. Using a blowtorch, I heated up the inside of the muffler and dropped the washer down into the intake side. Then I took the just fit socket with the extension and beat the washer in until it seated against the remaining ring. It was a press fit. Sealed up perfect. Cheap too...

I considered what several had said about finding a pair online, so I did just that. I found what looked like pristine factory (shots of printing on can) examples and hit 'em up. What I definitely noticed in my search was the end of the "stock" mufflers had a much more closed opening than mine do, so yeah, mine musta been bored out. No wonder they're so....

The weather is not looking like I'll get another ride in, so the bike's likely going into the cellar this week. I'll take the ones on it off and see what goes. Off to get some gaskets.

Now to line up a tune. Thanks one and all. I'll post results when.

Some one has probably drilled it.

There is a two baffle pipes that are caped. One in that let's exhaust thru hundreds of small holes into outer big section and then thru the other holes into and out the hole you look in.

With the crossover, each muffler shares both cylinders. So they help empty cylinder.

If someone left some rim in there, you can bolt a sandwich plate in there with long extension and sockets

It a good system . I got a brand new take off for about $40. Off the last year 96 night train Bolts right on.

Looked a lot better the the original stock on my bike. It had a set of Pythons on it. Total garbage.
Those pythons actually perform quite well. The stock on the other hand are what's garbage.

I had Pythons on my 2007 Stage 3 big bore build and they performed great..but damn were they LOUD AF ! which at the time of course I thought was cool..let's just say 15 years later now with my stock exhaust I don't miss the Pythons

I was in the same position as the OP.

The pipes that were on the bike when purchased (slash cut duals)....rode it like that for a couple years but at the end of a long riding day....we were always beat down from the sound

Swapped out to a Bassani 2 into 1.

Puts the exhaust note way out behind.

Much better (I also did a Power Commander V with the pipes).

I couldn't substitute performance for quiet. The stock exhaustis way too restrictive. Nothing good about epa compliance when it comes to the best interest of your engine.
