Strange noise between 2500 & 3000 RPM

just over 15,000. The machinist that originally bored my 96 inch cylinders to 103 inch did not have the pistons in hand when he did the final hone. In other words he gave me a generic 103 cylinder bore that was too loose. At that time, I did not know any better!😕😕
and to top that off,
I didn’t have the tools to measure cylinder bore or piston skirt.
chalk that one up to an expensive lesson.

Hypers can rattle a little when warm. Forged do the opposite tho the 4032s can rattle all the time. Loose enough and they all rattle all the time.

If he'd hit the numbers and you used HD pistons, you should have been fine.. Sounds like he didn't hit the number. 3.875" You can check clearance with a feeler gauge.. For 15K I would have expected more crosshatch. The tops of the pistons kind of look like low miles tho.

I run an oil catch can from the breathers. I believe that’s why the Pistons are so clean. It was the first modification I put on this motorcycle. Anyhow I had the Screamin eagle big bore cylinders put in torque plates and checked. cylinders were honed a smidge more because they were a little tight. I balanced the Pistons, reassembled, and I have run a few heat cycles. No more piston slap.

that question on forged pistons would be better suited to someone who builds engines every day. I am not sure about clearances for a forged piston. I do know that there are different clearances for each type of material used for forged pistons. And there is a different clearance piston to cylinder for regular cast aluminum pistons.
