Where to Begin

is that gear in the oil pump pronounced gee-o-rotor?
tdrglide you are correct that inner gear is broken. i didn't see the small piece that is missing. The advice from you and the others about doing a full tear down is what i will do. Just too many unknowns. The parts i have could be something that was never actually installed in this motor, or could have broken in it.
i think i would like to get a motor stand and pull the whole motor out and take my time tearing it down. Seem like a sound plan?

I don't disagree with anything tdrglide has posted but would not go full in on pulling the motor until the top end was off. Pulling the top end and inspecting everything would be the first step for me and based on what I find and can see down in the crank case would inform if the motor should come out. A couple of other things I would do would be to open up the oil filter to see what might have been captured and I would have Blackstone send a sampling kit, collect an oil sample and send it back to Blackstone for analysis.
Not saying pulling the motor is not a good idea, just saying it might not be necessary.

With the lifters in the way I'm curious what the inner cam brgs look like ?
Since the oil pump is hurt what's the end of the crank look like as well?
Had a 96 cu that the oil pump cratered and tore up the end of the crank
Good luck
