i said those are your choices. I have the tool, which is handy for when in the bike But when I had cases a part, I think it would have been easy to press out too.
I bought them years ago from George's garage, which was more. But now you got knocks off companies making them. Though the off brand cam bearing installer for the plate, had me wondering if could be off a hair.
Problems at 12k is very rare, and surprises me a little. But if a guy wanted to he could also do complete gasket set. But if it aint leaking, i wouldn't.
I'd do 95", low compression, mild cams, port, gears/hydro tensioners. Check tranny shifter and jack shaft for leaks too. Either that with so of miles, I would ride, and wait for a leak.
2002 with a timken bearing, would make a nice build for some power.

I also wouldn't be surprised he finds some leaks. single lip seal on tranny shifter for one.
