Default TC88 cam tensioner removal/ install tool

I’m going to change the tensioner shoes with those from CYCO.

I see videos of a scissor like loading /unloading tool… nowhere to purchased.

I see a socket like tool, many sources. Will this type tool work to remove and reinstall the complete tensioner assembly?

Short answer is no. That will only rotate the tensioner to a position to insert one of those pins to hold it in open position. Not really needed if you have something in the tool box to do the same.

The tool on the video allows you to remove the tensioner on the back of the plate (for the secondary chain) without having to press out the camshafts. the first tool you can use to release the tension from the chain and lock the tensioners in place which is required in the disassembly/assembly process.
To get to the back tensioner you need to remove the plate from the engine. would not hurt to use the opportunity to replace inner cam bearings. If you press cams out replace those bearings too. And you that would be a good opportunity to upgrade the cams too...

I found the tool… $129.00, but the seller requires payment through PapPal friends & family. I’m not sure I’m comfortable with a payment that has no recourse for dispute if I have a problem with the tool, or it never arrives.

I have that tool and would be willing to "rent" it to other forum members but the arrangement would require that the renter put up the $130 so if I don't get the tool back or it comes back damanged and I have to replace it, the replacement cost is covered. Of course, I would return the balance after the rental cost and out/back shipping were reduced. Paypal would be the easiest way to manage the transaction but I would be open to alternatives. The tool works just as it does in the video; very well made as it would be by a machinist.

I would be interested to know what other members would consider a reasonable rental cost and how long the rental period should be? I have a figure and rental peiod in mind but want to hear what other forum members think; maybe just a waste of time. Doesn't really matter to me, just a thought as I see similar posts from time to time

OP if it helps, I ordered that tool from the guy, and it arrived fine, and works great.

@djl I have thought of doing the same thing. I think a 2 week period is pretty reasonable? Maybe $5 or $10 rental fee? So they would cover $130 up front, and refunded $120 or so? I have borrowed tools from other very generous members on here before and just covered shipping to and from. I guess just whatever your tolerance level would be for that.

I have the holescreek tool. Pretty nice tool. Worth having if you plan on keeping the bike with those tensioners. I also have the one you showed in your first post. I found it kind of wonky to use. You can use big O pliers or crescent wrench to do the same and stick something of your choice through the hole to hold it open to be removed.
