Default 2006 Softail Deluxe Sputters/Backfires then dies.

Hello all,

I have a 2006 FLSTNI Softail Deluxe, 25,700 Miles l, Stage 1, Vance & Hines Exhaust.

Bike ran fine all day Sunday. After letting it sit for an hour and a half I went to put gas in it ( 1/4 Tank) and leaving the station it started to sputter and backfire and lose power, then stall.

Any idea where I should start looking?
Thank you in advance for any help.

Test the fuel pressure, if you are able. If not, start by looking in the gas tank for any leaks. The hoses can get pinholes and the regulators can also leak. Prime the fuel pump while looking inside, you might be able to see or hear it spraying.
Dirty fuel filter is another possible.

Thanks very much! I’ll check the tank tonight…

Hello again,

I drained almost the whole fuel tank, turned the ignition on and heard the fuel spraying against the inside wall of the tank.
I ordered a new check valve with the hose, a new fuel filter and a new pressure regulator with the housing.

Thank you for your hell!
I very much appreciate it!

Steve

You will typically hear fuel spraying the the tank while the pump is running. If you hear it when the pump is not, you have problems.

It’s the check valve hose that has a pinhole in it.
When I turn the ignition on, I can hear the spray hitting the side of the tank.
Following the service manuals procedure on getting the assembly out of the tank looks to be challenging at best.
I got the new check valve with the hose and also a new regulator and filter along with the new screws and tank gasket.
I’ve watched a couple of you tube videos on removing the assembly, so I’m going to try it myself.

Then you'll hear the leak after the pump has stopped. Not a hard job, a little tricky unlocking the fuel pump arm. For me, I heated the lines a little with a heat gun so they'd slip over the fittings. IIRC you'll need 1 more clamp then what is provided in the kits.

Thanks very much bro I appreciate the help! I didn’t know about the extra clamp so I’ll go get one and give this project a try!

Thanks again!

Steve
