Default Advice on buying a 2002 road king

Hi everyone,

Just joined the site today, and was hoping for some advice on a purchase I’m currently negotiating.

2002 Road King with just under 17k on the clock. The bike is currently owned by an older gentleman, who cannot ride any longer due to health reasons.

The bike has the original owners manual, and both keys/fobs. Garage kept, under a cover. He got the bike a little over a year ago from a neighbor who has since passed. He told me he traded his 10k pontoon boat for the bike. The title is clean. I looked at the bike and checked the usual stuff. Tires need to be replaced since they have a date code over six years, one of the saddlebag clips is broken (no big deal), I saw no drips/leaks. The overall condition of the bike is really nice and clean. The issue is we have no service records or any kind. I know the cam chain tensioners etc need addressing. I checked the oil and it looked good. The seller agreed to allow me to take the bike to a local Indy shop, and have it checked over. I’m calling them tomorrow to make an appointment. Battery is on a tender, he said he rode the bike around the block a few times since he has had it, but it basically has sat in the garage with sta
bil in the tank, and he just starts it every so often. 7500.00 cash deal. Any thoughts would be most appreciated guys!

Just wanted to let everyone know I pulled the trigger on the Road King! The Indy shop said the bike was “obviously garage kept, spotless, and ran strong” The only things were the tires that looked great but date code from 2013 (I knew that going in),drive belt was a little too snug, grips were a little worn etc. But they said no leaks and the bike looked and ran great. I’ll be putting on a set of Michelin Commander 3’s, and do a three hole fluid change etc.

Just got back from the DMV with my temp tag and title ordered, and put full insurance on her!

$7500 + 2 tires would be a tough sell in my area .
JMO .

Yeah the KBB in my area is 7100.00. I dig the color too! Don’t see many around in this two tone green color.

I was thinking that I’ll have to put some cash into it anyway, 15k service, tires etc, Do you think it’s worth it if the Indy shop says the bike is solid? From reading this forum, I understand the 2002 is a solid motor?

If I was in the market for that bike, I wouldn't hesitate if it checks out.

So if the Indy says it’s solid besides the obvious maintenance items, go for it? Solid platform?

I'm a cheap *** and would bargain the selling price down to at least factor to in the tire replacement.

The seller is someone who just thought it was a cool bike when he traded his neighbor for it. Originally was asking 10k!….lol…then came down to 9500, I told him the KBB was 7100 on Average. He came down to 8k. Indy shop quoted about 600 for a full 15k service, and I factored in 400 for new tires. So seller said he would split the difference with me, and said he is good with 7500 but won’t go lower. Bike looks great in person, 17k for an 02 is low mileage, so if the Indy shop gives the thumbs up, take it?

I don't usually give advice on someone on buys. All I can say is, I don't mind paying more if it what I want.
