Default Cam plate upgrade and cam upgrade for carb deuce.

Hello everyone. Thank you in advance. I have a 2002 Deuce with a carb 88. Im looking to upgrade my cam plate and cams. Any advice on what parts to go with? Do I need to re-jet my carb for cams? I am new at this. Any info is appreciated.

Are you wrenching the upgrade or having a shop do the work? Personally, I would go with gear drive and keep your cam plate. Have you done a cost comparison?

Unless money is burning a hole in your pocket, no need to replace the OEM cam plate. If you plan to do the work yourself, you will need the HD service manual and some "special" tools but there are work arounds. Converting to gear driven cams will eliminate the cam chains and tensioners which are a consumable part and require checking from time to time and the money you save by retaining the OEM cam plate will pay for the gear driven cams. Crank runout should be less than .003" for gear driven cams but the '02 models still had a forged crank and the Timken main bearings; near bullet proof crank and runout should not be an issue; I would not worry about it. Depending on how many miles, you might want to replace the oil pump with the Daytona pump that will increase scavenging and flow. You will need to replace the inner and outer cam bearings; inner with Torrington/Toyo B148s and OEM for the outer. You will need a press to press the gears onto the cams but you can take the gears and cams to a local independent shop or a dealer for that work. You will need to decide if you want to keep the OEM push rods or replace them with adjustables; cheaper to retain OEM push rods but more work. You will need to go up a size o the main and probably raise the needle to reject the carb.

Take a look at the kits S&S offers with cams, gears, bearings, o-rings, cam cover gasket, etc.; the S&S 509 or the Andrews 26 are the two most popular choices for a cam only upgrade for a TC88. Plenty of help on this forum for DIY assistance.

Plan above is the same if you don't want to go the gear drive route. Just replace the cam chain tensioners with a set of CYCO tensioners. They will last longer than OEM and are cheaper.
