Default S&S583 vs S&SMR103?

Looking at a cam swap for my 14 Dyna. Torn between the S&S 583 or MR103. I really want a stump puller but worried the 583 will limit me if I ever want to add compression/heads. MR103 is advertised as the best of both worlds for HP/TQ, where the 583 is purely torque cam. Currently have Bassani 2-1 with an intake and FP3 tuner. Side question: will I be leaving a ton of power on the table sticking with FP3 auto tune vs a dyno/powervision tune? Stacked question but any experience/advice would be appreciated!

I'm running the MR103& VH FP3 on my 15' Wide Glide I love it. With the Bassani 2-1 you're probably making better low end torque than I am with Freedom Perf Sharp Curve Radius w/ crossover, which I might add is not on the VH FP3 list of exhaust maps. I'm pushing 96HP and about 112 F/lbs of torque. You will most likely get more torque out of it than me. As far as the FP3 Auto tune.. I wouldn't sweat it much. The nice thing about the fp3 is you can have it dyno tuned and then save the map in the FP3 as a base-map for later (Thats what I did). Also with release of the new VH Fuel Pak Pro tuner, you can get it peaked out now. (Although I have yet to find a shop that offers it, but I'll be in line once I do find one.) I wouldn't say you're leaving a ton of power on the table though. Once you add compression and heads.. (I'm planning on doing the same later).

101hp with 583s in an otherwise stock 103?
That dyno is beyond happy. More like delirious.

actually it was done by one of the best tuners in the north east, the heads were street ported with the bigger 1.900 valves. dyno not delirious, jsut a good combination and a great tune. it was done by Joes cycle repair in new york.

Never heard of him. Pretty tall order claiming the best tuner in the northeast. Is that standard or sae, btw.
Not going to argue with ya. The MR103 will make considerably more HP because it carries out way further up the rpm range and will still probably make more peak torque. The 583 is done making power around 4500rpm. Not a hp cam by any stretch.
The MR103 is a much better suited cam for a bike like the dyna. Maybe loaded down and riding 2up the 583. It's a bagger cam. The dyna is the lightest twin cam there is.
In the same otherwise stock stage one 103, the MR103 made like 10hp more and 2 ft.lbs more than the 583. The 583 just makes it sooner.
Great cam for a trike.

i said he was one of the best. power is in the heads and the cams dictate where in the rpm band the power will be.

Joe is still doing work with his Disney dyno? Thought he'd be retired by now.

Obviously they're not familiar With Scott in Munnsville and Joe in Mechanicville.. I am and am fully aware of what they're capable of...

As for the cams the OP is trying to decide on, I think the MR103 would be the better choice but I'm A Woods guy... The TW-5-6 is a very under rated cam..

I will say THIS,
OUR dyno has gone thru several calibrations/re-calibrations, and gets updated with Dynojet's latest software, automatically.
Spot-on dyno numbers, from that very expensive piece of equipment, w/o any manipulations.
As engine builders for the past 34 years, with clients spanning the globe, and being a machinist since 1979, racing CE, and Mod Class AHDRA, and Maxton Mile Land Speed Record-setting bikes, WE engineer the combination, perform the precision machine work and head work in-house, and carb and EFI tune them in-house, once the assembly is checked and completed.
Total control of the entire process, is the the ONLY way we like this to occur. Period.
Myself and my multiple employees are working from 119 work orders currently, at our 4500 square foot, Harley-Davidson motorcycle performance facility.
We are in the shop at 7:00 am ever day.
Scott
