Well I could never find a definitive answer, there are ton of people having this same problem from HD to BMWs, and no one seems to know the solution.
I would not be surprised if the cheap cables that we get from China are defective, or burning out the wires.
I know I have had two or three that went bad charging on house current. I like the shorter ones and have been buying them online, cheap.
I have not had any problem with the original cables so guess I will just wrap the wires around the handle bars two hundred times;-)

I am still the 12 volt socket on my battery. runs my heated stuff my phone my GPS. hide the plug were the backrest goes.

Cigarette Lighter

Used my cigarette lighter socket to charge my phone yesterday and it worked fine. Also, if you smoke and want to light up while riding, the cigarette lighter is kind of inconvenient to get to. I purchased a couple of flameless electric USB rechargeable lighters from http://www.extremelighter.com/ for around $10.00 each. These can be recharged using your cigarette lighter socket or and computer using the USB port. They also have an LED light built into them.
