same here...never carry...(gas that is). If in unfamiliar territory on a long trip, particularly out west, the station you're filling at will tell you exactly how far to the next gas. Anyhow, like other folks said, it's nice to stop and stretch the legs every 100 miles or so.

Stop & stretch every 100mi or so is great, but if there isn't any where to buy gas what ya going to do ? I know of a couple routes down through Nevada where there isn't a station for about 230-250mi.
I don't normally carry extra gas, but I do carry a safe container in case I'm not sure I can make the journey easy. It may not always be full, but is there to be used. Most of the time I carry 2 gal.
Many trips involve side trips along the way otherwise I guess there is quite an adventure going across town...Unless you know exactly how far you are going to drive,,,, how are you getting back. I don't travel with a support vehicle !
Side roads, not freeways are the reason for many journeys ! Try it sometime.....

Becareful my friend, you're ASSuming... I don't necesssarily disagree with you, but I guess I'm luckey, I've never run across someone in a small off the main drag town or station that didn't know where the next possible fill up is depending on my intended route.

They might be able to tell you where the next gas stop is on most highways, but that isn't the point !! Can they tell you how far you are going off the main roads along the way?? NOPE !
You see I like to visit places off the main roads in this country. How far is that, and how far from there to the next gas ??? Hell no one knows many times until you've done it ! That is when maps & GPS come in handy !! Many of those places don't have paved roads, and towns are long abandoned ..
I have been places where I used at least 1 of the 2 gal. of my reserve. And then had to wait for the station to open up..... That was on two wheels, now I'm on three & that many times takes more fuel.... For some places now I have a trunk, I have even thought of another gallon. They only need fuel in them if you might be needing them. Not always.
The only time I do use a support vehicle is sometimes if I plan on being in an area for more than a week, I'll trailer the bike to the general area, then I have a place to sleep & eat. My bike trailer is set up for that. It also has a 20 gal fuel supply on board. For the cage or bike.
That's ok though,,,, maybe someone will be able to help ya along the way....I would...

Like others have said, 100 miles stop for gas/pit stop/etc. How many of you remember Mac/Cubby Bear traveling the country on their TG and got rear-ended on the interstate. If they had a gas can stored in the trunk, both would have perished. (We did lose Mac later than year.) And, just how many of us ride non-paved roads in our travels? Not me!!

I'm with you Barbara. I do not ride on un-paved roads. If the pavement ends I turn around. I sure do miss Mac/Cubbear.

I think a major difference here is between east and west. I live on the east coast and do most of my riding to/from here, so I am not likely to end up on an unpaved back road in the Nevada desert.

Gas can in trunk/TourPac = unexploded bomb.

The only fuel I carry is in my gas tank. No problems is you keep track of the fuel gauge AND the mileage. Fuel gauges have been known to fail.

I carry spare gas with me at all times.

I keep it in the lower quadrant of a big metal storage container I have mounted to the frame.

Whenever I run out of gas I simply move a lever under the container and I'm back on the road again ...

Jesus Louise......the TG's come with a 6-gal gas tank, fuel gauge and "range". What the hell did you people do before the increase of gallon tanks on motorcycles. If there isn't enough paved roads to travel in this country, best you start reading maps! Please tell me you don't carry gas cans in your cars.
