Everytime I take my trike in for service I tell them I think my belt is to tight and they say its within specs

I guess that means:
1. It is in Specs
2. Your calibrated eye is off
3. They are liars, incompetents, or just lazy

For a few bucks they make a belt tension gage. How much it is worth for your peace of mind

I agree with screwball, I'd get a guage if I were you. I trust the shysters at dealerships less than I trust politicians. I went out and bought all three manuals (trike body/accessories, touring model engine, and electrical diagnostic manuals) just so I could check their work after each service. Had my cruise control go out and I was able to tell the dealer the error code and what part number it affected when I took it in for repair. Hell, one dealer (in Raleigh NC) couldn't even replicate the problem because they never test rode the trike. I also try and do the minor stuff myself now.

I think they don't want to check it because if it is off they would certainly need to adjust it and to do the job correctly it is a lot of work.

When I signed the deal for the trike, they ran me through all the sales pitches that I told 'em I didn't want to be subjected to... I told 'em I'm paying cash, I want the price out-the-door and I didn't wanna get juked. No such luck. When the finance guy started in on me with the 3600 bucks for 3 years of 'free' maintenance, I told him politely but firmly that I'd just paid 180 bucks for the 3 service manuals, I'd be doing my own maintenance, and that I was pretty damned sure I could handle what needed doing for a hell of a lot less than 1200 bucks a year!

After getting the bike home and started checking it out, I found the air shocks had 5 lbs of air in them, the tires were 10-15 lbs low, and this after they charged me 560 dollars for the '500 mile maintenance' they did when they took it in on trade! If they can't even check air pressure, I have little faith that they could do the more technically challenging tasks.

And serpentine belts DO run a lot tighter than chain drives by design!

When adjusted properly one would think the belt is to tight but it isn't.
