Angry Guess What?? Another Starter Switch

My bride and I left this morning for a week-end get away since the weather this week-end was supposed to be good. We were headed to see the re-opened Kinzua Train Trestle Bridge that was taken down by a tornado in 2003. Well we got about 200 yaeds from our drive way when the dreaded noise that I hate started. The starter tried to engage. I know the sound and I hate it.

It is the 3rd one that has gone baad on mmy TG. The last one was when M3 and I were headed to Yellowstone in July. Well this time my trip wasan't ruined. M3 had installed the push button to operate the starter on both of our trikes. All I needed to do was disconnect the green wire from the starter and use the push button to start the trike. It worked like a charm.

I saw no ill effects from the green wire being disconnected. Everything worked as advertised. I will have the starter switch replaced but I will probably continue using the button. Had the switch shorted out when I was on the freeway I would probably would have not heard the starter trying to engage and that would have created a major problem for me.

Gees Mike, that really sucks! Glad your son turned us on to that aux starter switch. After you told us about it I ordered mine.... just in case. Hopefully the dealer can find out what is causing your problem.

Good Luck!

I'm thinking the problem is either poor design or QC because my switch failed also this year. I also bumped into another person who owns a 09 Touring that had a start button fail.

Just got my push button starter part in the other day. Have not installed it yet. Are you disconnecting only the green wire when needed or the entire plug the green wire is located in?

Thanks

Mike, is the starter switch only a problem for your model year or is Harley having problems on the 2011 and 12 TGs?

I started this thread Another Starter Switch Failure when the switch failed on my 2010, I think it should answer most questions anyone should have.

Geesh, Mike you sure are hard on the starter switches (lol). I ordered the push button Mike Jr told us about. Haven't had it installed yet, but just how "easy" is it to disconnect the green wire? Or, would my mechanic know how to do it.

TG thread....you all are great.

I have had the start switch replaced on my 2010 TG. I'll get a starter switch too.
