Default How to increase mileage?

I have a 11 XXX, Jackpot headpipes, mufflers, SE breather, S&S 551 cams, power commander. I run 3300 rpm at 80 mph, get 20-22 mpg, riding solo. Will be riding two up pulling a trailer. The thought of that mileage scares me. I only have 2600 miles on it. Is this normal for new trikes? I read of others getting 30 to 35, I would really like to see that. I am really happy with the power I have. Just got back from riding Beartooth pass, and going down the interstate in the Montana hills, I could set cruise at 80, and pass cars going uphill without touching the throttle. Just could not pass a gas station. Anybody got ideas? This may sound stupid but how much power would I lose by going to the 32 tooth pulley? When on 2-lane, and run 70 it drops the rpm to around 2900, and mileage goes up to around 30, which I could live with. Thoughts?

I've an almost stock 2011 XXX and I get just around 30 (28-32), but I still have a lot of heat to put up with. The 09 TG I had got 25-30. I'm no gear head, but I'd venture to say that the power commander, stage 1 and pipes probably decreased your gas mileage a bit. I had the PC V, Stage 1, and SE slipons on my 09 TG and it decreased my gas mileage.

I'm not too sure I'd change out the sprocket. You're gonna lose too much power. On my 09 TG I couldn't even shift to 6th gear until around 70MPH and it crawled at that speed. The 11 XXX with the 30 tooth sprocket hauls *** compared to the 09 TG.

I find with mine, speed is a big factor in mileage. If I stay below 70mph I get around 32 or 33 mpg. Go above 70 it drops to around 28mpg; go above 80 and it drops to about 25. Trike has about 6000 miles and I'm running Fuel Moto Jackpots, dyno tuned mufflers, SE air cleaner and PCV

Your trike is still young yet but I don't know anything about that cam you're running. I say it will get better with miles. I get 35.5 mpg with stock cam and what's in my signature. Many of us '09, '10 owners are installing the 30 tooth pulley which you have stock. Makes a world of difference in performance.

Get rid of the power commander or take it to a good tuner and have them set it up for torque and fuel mileage rather that cool sounding HP numbers. I put the SE syle filter, Jackpot headpipes, SE Fatshots and a Fuel Moto preset PCV on the wife's trike. Fuel mileage dropped to 28-31 mpg. Tried a different download after a few weeks and then the cruise would not stay engaged and the six gear light wouldn't work. PCV is now in the drawer. I put a set of 13.8 XIEDs on it and now she gets 40 mpg, it runs stronger and everything works as it should. Plugs are light tan and she noticed how much stronger and smoother it was on the first ride after the change. We just ran a 6000 mile trip where she towed a motorvation trailer and solo with the loaded trailer she had no problem pulling hills and still getting 33-38 mpg. MT speed limit is 70 on two-lane 75 freeway. we run 70-75.

Bronxbill has it right. Push Tubby over 70 and MPG goes down real fast. Wife gets a pretty steady 35+mpg under 70 with her '10XXX.

+1 add me to the list, get past 70 mph and the fuel mileage is going to go down., I don't get 20 - 21 though. The OP's PC may be running a map that is to rich in the cruising areas.

On our recent trip out West our speeds were 75+ and at times 80+.I didn't worry about gas milage, was having too much fun keeping up with M3.

I have the same set-up as bronxbill other than the cam. The # off the dyno came out at around 80 hp and 99 torque. It was great for running the hills, I loved the way it performed, just scared of the mileage. I just think if I could get the rpm under 3000 at 80 mileage would improve. I know I am better off with the 30 tooth pulley for performance, but with that kind of torque how much differance would it make. I have never riden a trike with the 32 so I dont know how much difference the change made. Maybe it will pick up as the miles come up also, or did I do the wrong thing with my cam choice? Just looking for ideas.

Don't know about the cam issue, but I had a 32 tooth sprocket in my 09 TG and it was a dog trying to pass anything in 6th gear. Additionally, I rode it in the Smokey Mountains alot and it didn't have any get up and go. Now that I have experienced an 11 XXX with the 30 tooth sprocket I wouldn't go back even if my MPG dropped to 15.
