I went from getting the yellow light at around 150 miles to going to almost 180 before the light comes on. It can be a pain in the butt to keep going after shut off depending on the pump, but it does get more miles between fill ups on trips
That little bit of extra fuel is a pain in the butt. I travel with guys that have touring bike and they are always waiting on me. But by the time I get full, the bathroom is empy, plus I get the last laugh on the curves. they are always complain that I get to far a head of them.

Default Another mileage question

I posted this reply on another thread because I keep having trouble negotiating this sit so if you have seen it already, sorry. I really do appreciate all the valuable input from all of you and hope one of you might have some input on this:

I don't know if my 2011 Trike is breaking in now or what, but I just changed my windshield from the 12" stock one to a 7" WindVest windsheild and am really thrilled with it. I can now see over it when it rains (I am a small person) and more importantly my mileage picked up 4 to 5 miles per gallon since I put it on about 300 miles ago. I only put good gas Chevron or Shell in so the only difference is the windshield and hitting the 2000 mile break in mileage. It seems hard to believe that just the windshield would make that much difference so maybe it is the break in time also. Owning a computer store and being around various computer programs and knowing what is possible, I wonder if Harley hasn't programmed something into the trike's computer to automatically change settings as it breaks in to force customers to break it in properly? Strange but possible.

Now my next question for anyone out there. I want to change my pipes to the Vance and Hines pipes and the new headers without the cats in them. Also the Stage One kit Vance and Hines tells me (of course) that there fuel pak is the way to go as opposed to the Harley download. Harley tells me (of course) that the download is far superior to the fuel pak when using the Vance and Hines pipes (which Harley recommends). Vance and Hines wants $1800 total to do the job and Harley wants $2000 to do the job. Does anyone have any experience with the download vs the fuel pak?

Thanks

My wife rides a FLHXXX tri-glide and gets consistantly 38-41 MPG. We live in MT so nearly all the two lane roads we ride include hills, if not mountains and we run the speed limit plus a few (speed limit is 70). We run the western freeways at 75-80. The trike has had SE Fatshotz on it since day 1. When she first got the trike she was a new rider and was averaging 35-38 MPG. And I know she was shifting to 6th too soon and too often. After the first 5000 miles (didn't take long) I added adjustable Nightrider XIEDs adjusted one notch above halfway and the Ness SE style air cleaner. And lots of counsel to make sure she wasn't afraid of using the RPM. I told her the newer HD V-twins live for 3000-3500 RPM, that's where the bread and butter is for torque. Then she was getting 38-39. This winter I added a fuel moto head pipe and swapped the adjustable XIEDs to my Road King and put my 13.8 XIEDs on her trike. Remember she is a pretty new operator with only 14000 miles on her own and she has stated every time she has ridden it since the latest mods that it has a lot more power and I can see it by the way she hangs tight when following my 110 Ultra up the hills and coming out of the turns now. She likes to play with the throttle more now and I figured fuel mileage was out the window but I checked 4 tanks of fuel and she's consistantly pulling 40 MPG and better now. She still doesn't even think about finding 6th until 70-75 mph and it seems to be working well. For my 240 lb **** or with a passenger I think the 30 tooth sprocket would be a needed mod and she's no light weight kid any more but does just fine loaded for touring with the XXX as is. The XXX is lighter to start than the FLHT version but not that much with her added bumber, mudflaps, CB, touring seat, lowers, luggage rack, trailer hitch, driver backrest and passenger backrest.

greyfang,
I have a Windvest as well, so keep in touch, after installing my lift kit I may need to go to a 10" instead of my 9". My 9" is gunsmoke as my bike is Vivid Black. If yours is not clear, maybe we can swap them out and help each other.

I just had my 1000 mi.service done and also changed to a 10 in. windshield from the 12.I've picked up 5-6 more mpg. from 28-29 mpg to 35-36 mpg. Probably a combo of both things.

The increase on mileage may be because its getting broken in. I have a 12" Clearview recurve on mine and I get 33 - 37 mpg depending on how I ride.

I am wondering if most of you live outside of California. I now have 5000 miles on my 2011 tri glide and get about 29-30 mpg. As I live in the middle of the Mojave Desert most of my riding is either Hwy or 2 lane straight aways so 75 - 85 mph is the norm. I have not changed my air cleaner yet and still looking for advice on the pipes i.e. Harley download vs the Fuel Pak. I am also wondering if being a California model with all of out emission crap if my mileage doesn't suffer because of that. My next upgrade will be the stage one air cleaner and then after that I think the pipes. Anybody with any knowledge of HD download vs Vance and Hines fuel pak?

I know your fuel quality doesn't help with fuel mileage. The HD download doesn't do a whole lot, its still lean. I have no experience with the fuel pak.
