Don’t be like the customer at the parts counter asking for a longer dipstick because it doesn’t reach the oil level anymore. 😉

Default Oil temp only

Jim,
Yeah I compared the new LED Chrome dipstick at the counter in the service area. I text my Service Guy and he goes and gets the part for me so I don’t have to chase it down.

i actually bought it for the temp gauge ONLY.

However I will mark the new dipstick at the correct spot and ignore the other.

One could always just grab the trike and lean it over at the correct lean angle too

Problem solved

Mike

My ‘17 RG has a scale for on the side stand and one next to it for straight up, is the trike’s straight up different than the 2 wheeler straight up?

Jim, please post up the engine and oil temp comparison when you get the info.

Thx

Default Temp dipstick

Schex,

For whatever reason the temp dipstick is a leaner only.

All my other HD’s had both ways. Guess HDMO got lazy.

Anyway on a RG3 one can check oil is ok in the Info area too, but I don’t rely on that one.

I plan to post it. Might not be for a day or 2 though. We have really hot weather here right now, not suitable for enjoying riding OR for getting meaningfully normal oil and engine temperatures. I'm going to try to do a very early morning ride where the ambient temperature is sensible.

WHERE do you see the oil temperature or level (unclear which one you mean) on the RG3? I have not seen that.

They still want to maintain that 260+ degrees are “normal” even though their own Factory Service info states no higher than 230*

Now that is interesting at a minimum!

Another question, would it be better to run 50 weight regular oil instead of SYN 3, 20 W 50 ?

Maybe we should look more into our Oil Cooler on our bikes. Think I read they have a fan although I’ve never heard it or seen it.

My 2013 TriGlide has an oil cooler mounted under the “chin” near the Voltage Regulator.
Apparently stock on 2011-2017 not Twin Cooled TRIs

I’ve also read that our Air Cooled bikes run cooler than the water head cooled bikes.

Anyone with real facts please post the information.

One thing for sure is that I have learned quite a bit from this forum, and thank everyone for helping!!!

Synthetic oil is supposed to resist Thermal Breakdown better than Dino oils.

Jim,
It’s oil level only not temperatures. Push and hold in your left volume know, after 3 seconds a menu comes up.
Move same button to the 3 o’clock position.

Your in the info area, move left to right with r/h button and the engine one shows oil OK.
That’s it.
I wish it was temperature but it’s not.

Why not do test when it’s hotter, heck it gets 105 here every summer!!

Mike, I plan to test a multiple temperatures, but I want a "normal" baseline" test FIRST, because I want to know how good or bad the oil temperature is under normal conditions. Then, I can gradually test at multiple temperatures to see how high I can go, and for how LONG, without worrying about oil temperature.
