Default Catch can to filter

After reading the comments on MikeRG3s post about catch cans vs. Filters my curiosity got the better of me. With 1300 miles remaining on our trip I decided to give the filter route a try.
while we had the air filter off for cleaning we installed a new hose, routing it down and back under the frame.

It seems on the first part of the trip running at freeway speeds we were getting a lot of oily water in the catch can, to the point of filling the can, then blowing back on the exhaust and right side fender. Don't need more "stuff" to worry about when on the road.
we'll see how the filter works on the second half of our trip,.
I am concerened a little that it maybe hanging a bit low, we'll see

What is the filter for? The breathers are one way.

I would think it would allow the water to evaporate without blowing back, and keep other "foreign" matter out of the hose.

Again, the head breathers have a one way umbrella valve. How is anything going to go back?

Water, blowing back on the underside, not up the hose

This is a breather off a 6-71 Detroit. Notice, no filter. Before EPA stepped in, most engines ran this way. just sayin

Deep six the filter, it not doing anything. If anything it will get so dirty it will restrict the air flow out of the engine, When that happens gaskets start to weep.

I have the external vent hose running into the same place. I put some steel wool in the hoe to keep out bugs. I've done that many times.
