I have considerable back issues like so many others on trikes. Yesterday I took my Freewheeler up a poor road and the bumps were very jarring and the discomfort for me continues today. I rode the same road in the past with my FXDC c/w a Sundowner seat with minimal discomfort. I know I was able to dodge more of the rough spots with two wheels but wondering what role the seat played. I'm a considerable distance from a dealership so it is not practical to try a demo seat. I know Corbin makes a great seat but their prices (and aftermarket service) are huge deterrents. The Sundowner isn't cheap either but worth it if it keeps me riding! I am also curious if the Sundowner is the same seat for all touring models in case one appears on ebay etc.

Mustang Super Touring Deluxe worked for me right out of the box, Extra wide (19 "); sets you back an inch or so; thicker w/medium foam; very comfortable and the back rest bracket is built in. (However, the back rest is out of stock) A little pricey at $700.00 from JPCycles, but IMHO well worth it.

 

Try the HD Sundowner for the Freewheeler. We really liked ours and your dealer may have a loaner sundowner you could try before buying.

Another vote for the Sundowner. Wife loves hers. And she has back issue.

 

I believe there are a few different Sundowner seats in the touring platform. But the difference is your proximity to the bars. One is a reach. One is standard and one is for taller people.

I am not a fan of the ride of the Freewheeler for those with back issues. I do thing the TriGlide is a better option. The added weight tones down the harsh ride. But I do understand the cost difference. I’ve added Ohlins blackline shocks and the lift kit to really not get that big of an improvement over all.

it is what it is. That straight axle with send you rockin on bad roads and no amount of add ons will fix it. It may make it less harsh. But the way you ride will help too. When you see a pot hole you absolutely cannot avoid or any obstacles. I hit the with the front tire and let it pass between the rear tires. The you only get an upward hit. Not a side to side rocking hit. Most times if you try to send the obstacle between the front tire and the rear. You will just hit it with the rear. Riding the trike like that made it a much more enjoyable ride. I put 6000 miles on my wife’s 2019 when it was mine for 3 months before giving it to her.

i only recently did the suspension upgrades for her. And in true woman fashion. She didn’t notice a difference. Lol. But in her defense. I didn’t see a big change either.

Also. Lowering the air pressure in your rear tires will help. Don’t run the suggested pressure. Like riding on basketballs.

The Mustang definitely looks very comfortable. The cost would not likely receive unconditional approval from my CFO! The Sundowner is closer to a manageable expense and I'll see about a demo trial next time I visit a dealership.

Your post was very helpful. The tire pressure is something I will address immediately. I do like the Tri-glide and cost is the barrier. However, the Freewheeler does meet my needs and is a great compromise between a Road King and not riding! If my wife could join me more often, the Tri-glide option would definitely receive more consideration!

 

Like you I wanted a more comfortable seat but did not want to spend the money on a Corbin, Mustang or other specialty seats.

I did some checking and found that the seat from a Road King fits “almost” perfectly.

See the blue arrow in the attached photo. There is a small gap that the Road King seat does not cover.

This is way better than the stock seat.
