Heated Gear Using Battery Tender

Gerbing 12V Accessories
Gerbing makes a heated gear "Port kit" that connects right to the battery. The port is a mounted connector that I put on the left side wind deflector right in front of the seat. The port comes with a rubber plug to protect it when not in use. The installation is easy, once you get by the drilling a hole in the deflector.

+1 on that recommendation from First Gear. I talked directly to the owner/manufacturer and he said the same thing. He supplied me with a separate fused heavier gauge wire that is separate from the Battery Tender wire and are compatible with my Harley Tri Glide and other wiring.
That's the correct action. The fuse is there to protect the wiring and is rated accordingly....so adding a bigger fuse to the Battery Tender leads isn't a good idea. You may get away with it if the current draw isn't too bad, but you're defeating the safety ratings.
Running heavier gauge wiring directly to the battery (with or without a switch)with an appropriately rated fuse is the correct solution.
Reference the table below:
Remember, these are the recommended maximum fuse ratings for the corresponding wire sizes. If you are using wire sizes smaller than the reccomendations with a larger fuse, there can be problems. However, using a smaller fuse than what is reccomended is the way to get an efficient system. Small fuse, big wire is always most safe.
