Default Fuel Gauge Reads Full?

Ride a 2009 Street Glide ...

last week whileattending the NC Rolling HOG Rally I noticed that my fuel gauge nevermoved from "FULL" regardless of the actual amount in the tank. Furthermore, the need fuel indicator light would come on atapproximately 3/4 of a tank but would go off each time I topped off yet on again at ¾ of a tank. Cansomeone help....

Your question didn't belong in the "New Members Area".
It's for introductions. So it was moved in one of the other forums.

Wink

Hi from the UK and welcome to HDF.

Your bike has a fuel level device inside the gas tank, which is a float on the end of a piece of wire. It sends a signal to your gauge and light. You can see it for yourself by looking at one of the on-line parts websites, like this one. Your problem suggests the mechanism has stuck, or failed in some way. Have you had any work done inside the tank recently, like a new fuel filter installed?

Yep. My Ultra's sticks a lot. I just fill up about every 150 miles or so.

Thank you for your reply. No work had been done....I did however topper her off to the little past max... first thought that could've cause the problem.

If you get around 40mpg you can ride for around 200 miles before you need to refill (adjust that guess to fit your actual experience!) which may just encourage your fuel level float to reset itself. Before the days of fuel gauges and warning lights we routinely reset the mileage trip in the speedo, when refilling, and riding no further than our known range. That is a back-up system to this day! If your gauge continues to play up get a dealer or indy to check it for you.

Sounds like you need either a new Fuel level sensor kit or a fuel gauge.

I believe the service manual has a detail on testing.

I'm at work, and don't have my manual, if I remember, I'll check tonight.
