Default 10,000mi broken sprocket

10,000mi broken sprocket, I heard a strange noise from the back of the bike that I was expecting to turn out to be a loose shield or something. I removed the saddlebags and immediately saw that my belt was a quarter off the inside of the rear sprocket. The ring that forms the inside wall of the sprocket has fallen off and rattling around the hub. Glad to be close to home when this happened. I'm sure that if the belt was way out of line it would have walked right off the sprocket so I am wondering what caused this and are they gonna warranty it? Anyone else have this happen or hear of it?

I'd bet they warranty it. I'd bet MOCO will want the dealer to send the defective part back for inspection as well.

Sure seems like it would be a manufacturing or materials defect.......

I'll bet the MoCo will want to see what caused that ASAP...!

That could be a large potential problem...

Glad you got it home without a bigger issue....

It could have been a manufacturer defect but I would bet my money that the failure was caused by metal fatigue from an improperly alligned belt. Now that the "lip" is gone the belt is riding in its natural allignment which would have been constantly pushing against the lip.

I'd ask the to verify pulley alignment, these belts are supposed to be real tough. Maybe the belt cut the side off.

enough misalignment to knock off the plate IMO would show more wear on both the belt and the plate, and would have walked off the sprocket. This dealer did the services @ 1k,and 5k so major misalignment would be on them,IMO

I would imagine that pulley is either cast or forged. Something popped that side off. It would not have to be major either, and why is the belt over to the inside of of the pulley?

Glad you didn't suffer further damage or injury. I believe they will find the cause and fix it under warranty. Since the belt is self centering on the pulley and driven from the trans. pulley, it would appear the rear wheel may have come out of alignment. I hope they check axle torque, belt tension and alignment before dis-assembly. Good luck!

Good points and good observations....

Yet, I would think the belt would be frayed if it "cut" the lip off. But then again, I'm no expert. I do find this interesting because this is the first issue like this I've ever read about.

Sure hope it's not a design flaw requiring perfect belt alignment or else.... (tongue in cheek)

OP, I'd be interested to hear how this all works out in the end.... and what HD says...
