Default Topping Off Gas Tank in CA

Suppose one of the "benefits' of a later model touring bike is the 6 gal gas tank-that said, I can never seem to be able to get close to filling the tank to within a safe proximity of "full" in CA; I assume-due to the pump nozzle vapor capture configurations. Couldn't fill up my since departed Road King all the way and have the same issues with my 2013 Ultra.

What's the trick besides sitting there at the pump for an hour playing around with the nozzle? From being close to empty (fuel light on and DTE around 45 miles) I can only put about 3.6 gals max, in the tank! The fuel gauge does go up to just under "full" but starts heading south after only 5 miles of riding.

I have tried a variety of gas stations-all the same results.

May be different than here in CO, but I pull the nozzle almost all the way out and watch until the gas gets to the top. I also wiggle the bike a bit to get the bubble out a few times and keep going until it's completely full.

Your kidding right ? You really don't know how to top off your tank in CA...

I lived there most of my life so I know what your talking about... but really...

It is not rocket science just hold back the nozzle vapor thingie with your hand and top her off

I fill up till the nozzle stops then I pull back the sleeve that covers the nozzle. That allows you to pump gas with the nozzle out of the tank. Pull the nozzle out just enough so you can see the fuel level. Then I slowly add gas, as the fuel level rises to near the top, I stop and allow it to go down a bit, then I slowly add more. I do this a few times till I feel like I can't add much more. It takes a few minutes but I've been able to get pretty close to 6 gallons into my tank. It's also tricky if the nozzle you're using doesn't allow you to slowly stream gas. I sometimes end up splashing it all over the place.

Not kidding-tried that a few times-maybe worked semi-ok twice. Made a mess or didn't work most of the time-but, maybe I am grossly overthinking the whole procedure-I tend to do that sometimes; and I am fairly new to CA-after spending 37 years up in WA

Thanks for the tips.

I thought we had to go to the dealer for gas while it was under warranty?

I assume your bikes on the side stand while re-fueling? Stay seated on your bike and keep it level while fueling and you can get more in the tank also.....
