Default Seat Ideas...Ultra Classic

So far, this forum has been absolutely fabulous. Members are polite and very knowledgeable and helpful to HD noobies...

So...I know asking this question is about as open ended as it gets, like asking someone's favorite oil or brand of car. So I'm looking for suggestions.

05 Ultra Classic with 30K on it. Just bought it a week ago...used. And love it.
I'm 6', 260 lbs and ride two up with my gal often. Add 130 for her.
I have a Mustang Seat and HD Backrest.
Went on a short trip, highway...about 70 miles. Seat, no matter how I moved about, just not comfortable. Put another 60 to 70 on back roads, a few stops, then came home. ON the way home, butt was really starting to burn and get uncomfortable.

Commander II tires, 40 PSI back, 38 up front. Air Suspension set at 18lbs.

I called 4 dealers in a 50 mile radius of me, all of them participate in the seat demo program, none of them have a seat for anything older than 09.

I honestly think a stock seat would be better...or perhaps a tall boy seat.
Last thing I want to do is set down nearly 4 bills to find out.
I'm going to pick up some wooden bead seat covers for now... and I've seen the AirHawk setup.

I have to be honest....I think a decent seat, without breaking the bank, should allow me to ride for at least a full tank of gas (200 miles +/-) without any kind of discomfort.
I"m looking for other ideas...and of course, I want bake my cake...eat it too...lol.

Looking for Inexpensive and quality... (I know I can buy an Air Zepplin, Corbon, etc., and spend a pretty penny)
Bought the bike to take longer trips in comfort...and everything but the seat was just an absolute dream!!

Thanks all...much appreciated!

My wife has never enjoyed riding more than 50 miles at a time because of her butt getting sore. This was the case with the stock seats on a heritage classic and SG as well as adding the better pillion for the heritage, adding an airhawk cushion, trying a saddleman road sofa, and the deep bucket sundowner seat.

Last winter I bit the bullet and bought the road zeppelin. I never complained about any of the seats before, but this one is so much better than any I have tried it is not in the same league. My wife rode for three days last week with me. We rode 100 to 150 miles each leg and she was very comfortable the whole trip and didn't ask me for a rest stop at all.

I have done two 800 mile days with it solo and would hate to give it up, but it would suck to spend that much on a seat and not be happy with it. That's what happened with the road sofa, but saddleman gave me my money back since we didn't like it.

Sorry Roch...maybe I wasn't clear.
I am the one with the uncomfy backside. She never complained once...and was fine the whole trip.
Truth be told, I traded my Metric Cruiser in last week (with a Mustang Seat..no less...lol)...and her backrest/seat/floorboard, wind break, along with the weight of the bike... she's in absolute heaven.

It's my "butt on the line"...
That's my biggest fear. Shelling out hundreds, NOT being happy...and being stuck with the seat, or taking a loss selling to someone else.

Any chance you can find someone local that has different seats to try? Maybe look for a stock seat that will fit you bike that someone has laying around?

That's what I'm kinda looking for here..
I've got my Mustang Seat from my old bike sold...so that'll be used to fund it. Plus, I'll sell this one.

The worst part of trying a new seat is it isn't like you can just take it around the block and know how you will like in on an all day ride.

Test rides for long distance comfort have to be on a long ride or it's hit and miss what you will feel like 10 hours down the road.

Precisely sir. I've taken a few surface road/back road trips around the house, 20-40 miles...no issues. Love it... It was a longer trip that exposed it... the exact reason I bought the bike.
I found out about the demo program...but it's really only current models, after hearing the same thing from 4 dealers, I'm sure it's the same most places...

Don't know what your budget is. Ultimate seats have a 14 day money back period that would give you time to evaluate the comfort level.

Have you tried more air in the suspension? I have an '03 Ultra and only wiegh 150 plus about the same for my wife. We run at about 25 psi, a couple psi more when loaded and that's just to take the worst of the bottoming out. Shocks are coming off as soon as the budget will allow.

Unfortunately, seats are like bars and windshields. What works for one, doesn't work for another.

Just for reference, I took the stock '03 seat off and put on a Mustang Ultra Touring and love it.......

You are big guy for a Mustang or stock seat. I know at 300 and have had both.

I would look into Corbin. Love mine and so does the lady. They are a firmer seat that will keep your tailbone from riding or bouncing on the plastic set pan which is what I found with Mustang and stock seats. Just my $0.02.

p.s. they are not cheap but worth it.
