A CV carb is stock. If ya have a Mikuni there is no advantage going to a S&S. Tune it.

If the motor is stock, keep the CV.. You won't see any improvement til you fix the head flow..

Both are excellent, the S&S is simpler and in my opinion, capable of better breathing for performance where performance is the goal. For day in and day out riding, the Mikuni gets my nod.

I have a Super E on both my bikes, 1997 FXSTSB, 1989 FLHTC. During a trip to Sturgis with the Bad Boy got 50 mpg. When I got the FLHTC it had a Mikuni, got 38 mpg. I tried to change the jets, but could not get them out. So went to a Super E, got 48 mpg. These are imperial gallons. I have been S&S since the 1980s, used to a Super B. They very simple to adjust. Don"t ask what happened to the Mikuni.

Didn't have a metric screw driver? Too bad...

The improvement depends 100% on the skill and knowledge of the tuner- to tune the carb to the potential of the motor.

BOTH the Mikuni and the S&S will need adjustment if you change elevation much.

The stock Keihin CV carb would not, it is self adjusting for air density changes whether altitude or temperature.

Again it depends on the skill of the tuner.
Nightrider.com biketech section has info on modding and tuning the CV carb.

My 80" 1995 FLHTC with CV got 45 MPG at 65 MPH and sailed through emissions.

It also left way behind my Pal's 103/103 twin cam road king with Mikuni once we changed elevation- he was tuned for 1400' Phoenix...much of Northern AZ is 5000' +, Flagstaff is at 7000'
