It was bad that the girl backed into your bike while talking on a cel phone. I imagine that the cell phone distraction contributed to the accident. Probably would not matter if she wee a guy or girl though. We as riders understand the importance if concentration while riding. Cagers feel safer because of the added 2 wheels and metal surrounding them.

All of that withstanding, saying that cell phones should be banned is as bad as saying that all riders should wear helmets and full protective gear. It won't do much to stop distracted, or mc injuries, but it will be one more thing that takes away our freedoms, many if which we are rapidly willing to abdicate already.

Let the injuring parties take responsibility, and realize that we cannot legislate, nor control every negligent act out if existence.

Back on topic, I after with Dickey. Women talk too much.

Connecticut has the same law, and I believe the fine is more, BUT it doesn't get enforced unless there is another violation involved.

Oh and it IS LEGAL for LEO's to be on phone so they don't see other people breaking the law as they are preoccupied on their own phone.

Yeah they just put the car in L for LEAVE n don't look...I don't know how many days I ride home and going 60-65 and pass these fools texting while they pass you..I would just love to put a brick thru their windshield but its not worth it...Lawmakers should hit ppl HEAVY in the wallet to cure this and maybe a day or two in the pooper for repeat offenders if that doesn't work..And $285 is not enough...
Hope things work out for you, and sorry to hear about the ride..

You can't lump all women into the same category. Just like you can't lump all men into the same category. I don't use my phone while driving. I'd slit my own wrists before I'd text while driving.

There are plenty of other distractions for drivers...kids, food, makeup...some people just can't multitask and think they're doing good.

At least the gal didn't take off.

I used to do that when I could. Now I try to park away from cars and trucks.

That reminds me, way before cell phones, women passing on the Interstate, doing makeup in a mirror. Scary.

I saw a guy going down the road while eating a (paper) cup of soup - bowl in one hand, spoon in the other.

Not suggesting that, and is out of context. Cell phone talking while driving affects the public, what I have or do in my home only affects me personally. There is a difference. Another person's freedom shouldn't be at the loss of my freedoms, bodily harm or life.

There are reasons why we have laws against driving under the influence, however in my house I can get as drunk as I want to.

Talking on the cell phone in hand has been proven to be a driving hindrance yet we do very little about it as more people are hurt and die.

All cell phones should come with a feature that when moving over 5 miles an hour the in hands calling is disconnected, cannot receive or send text messages, in coming calls are blocked with a message stating the person is driving and a person can only call 911 when under motion. GPS can work, and you can start playing music but you can't change songs etc while under way.

There have been too many lives lost and money spent because of these cell phones. I have grown to dislike them very much.

I am glad you were not on the bike and she had insurance.
it amazes me how people will come out of a store and hop in their car and immediately make a phone call and drive away. wtf can't you just sit there in your car while you make the call, finish it, and then start driving?

i disagree with the above cell phone disabling. why should everyone be punished because the driver is an idiot? there is absolutely no reason why my wife can't pull her phone out of her purse and talk to the kid, look something up on the internet, check the map, etc. while i am driving. your scenario would not allow this. if you support this idea, i guess that you also support a national helmet law as well?
