Actually oil is less dense then water, but heavier than water. So are you saying water can leak thru a gap smaller then oil can leak out of? I know the oil companies say one of the main reason oil has a shelf life is moisture can get into a sealed plastic bottle. jmn1960, have you still got the milk oil? Put it in a sealed jar and let it sit and see if water shows up on the bottom. Your're using a GL5 oil that has a lot of additives. Know this is not an oil thread but the call out is GL4 since your shift forks have bronze on them.

Try changing to a different brand of gear oil, and see what happens...

Here is a link. Best of my knowledge from reading what the makers say, I just try to quote what they say and not what someone says that it work for. Interesting that you say your Valvoline is GL4. I have a container that says GL5 and we used it in a limited slip rear end in a Mustang.

GL4-GL5 no biggie, the GL5 has a slightly better additive package. Might help, won't hurt. Do you wash your bike when it's still hot? If you do, the tranny can create a vacuum when it is suddenly cooled by the wash water and actually suck water into it. Stranger things have happened, so don't be alarmed. I never wash a hot bike.

I have had it happen only once and agree that it is from moisture. How it got in there I don’t know — through the vent hose, condensation and a lot of short trips where the bike doesn’t get hot enough to evaporate the moisture I guess.
