Default Canadian Gas

Taking a trip into BC this month. The group I'm riding with is concerned about the quality of gas and have advised me to bring along some octane booster (snake oil?). I can't imagine the gas being any different (other than the price) than what we have in the lower 48. Any northern friends out there with the real scoop?

Based on my experience here in the eastern border states I would have to say there isn't an issue. Just be aware of ethanol blends. Not certain if canada is required to display that info or not. Along the border here in northern NY and new england states a good percentage of our gas comes out of the canadian petroleum terminals.

the last time I was in Canada, other than figuring out the Liter conversion and of course the Canadian / US dollar conversion, gas was the same. one thing though. I found lots of full service stations. I have not seen one of those in the US for a heck of a long time.

The gas is fine in Canada. We have several grades available.
1. regular 87 octane
2. mid grade 89 octane
3. premium 91 octane, recommended
4. super 94 octane, not always available

and no we don't all live in igloos! EH

Gas is good up here. We aren't living in the stone ages
Premium gas does not contain any ethanol UNLESS you fill up at Husky. They are a 94 octane but also has ethanol. Anywhere else its 91 octane and good fuel. Never had an issue running it in my turbo sleds that require good fuel.
Also, in BC its "Pay before you pump." That is a rule that is BC wide.

Thanks for the responses guys. I especially liked the "stone age" and "igloo" references. Good stuff.

your question is answered but no one from BC. Just want to validate that our gas is no different than yours. we do have 94 ethanol free mostly in the southern 1/2 say to Prince George. Octane boost? hard to say if it does anything but we did use it in the northern half on a trip to Yukon with only 89 at some stops.

not to worry about fuel quality.
BUT if you are going to be off the main highways fuel may be less available at night

BTW metric conversion is 1 US gallon = 3.96 litres

Oh and Happy Canada Day, fellas!

You will find 94 octane at Chevron and there is a lot of them. That's all I use in my bike about $1.60 per litre right now

This is an old thread but I will chime in on this since I am the gas station supervisor at Costco in Prince George, B,C. If you can buy Costco, Esso or Shell premium gas it is 91 octane and contains no ethanol. Next would be Chevron, no ethanol in their premium but an additive called techron. Other stations no idea but I can always find one of these on a trip, so should keep your tank full.
