Default Broken lower fairing vent

Noticed yesterday that the sliding vent thingy on my right side lower fairing was broken. The plastic had broken around where the mounting bolt goes through it.

I took it all apart and JB Welded it, hope it holds.

Is this something others have seen? I can't say I've seen threads on it but it seems to be a pretty flimsy design.

Default Broken lower fairing vent

My RH lower fairing vent has been rattling & seems too loose- haven't looked closely at it yet. (My ride is a 2011 FLHTK)

Default lower fairing

It's fairly common for the right vent to break. I think it's caused by hitting it with the brake foot when the vent is open.

I had one replaced under warranty and so did one of my buddies.

They are made out of abs plastic. The best glue to use is abs pipe solvent from the plumbing section of the hardware store. Especially if you can use a scrap of abs as a reinforcement. The solvent melts them together.

If JB Weld doesn't hold it I'll probably buy a new piece...can't cost that much. Right??

Know this is an ancient thread, but in case anyone else continues to have this issue with the older bikes; Harley has discontinued production of Part# 58889-05 (Right vent door) and it is no longer available. The left vent door, Part# 58890-05, is also obsolete but is still available on ebay. Go figure that Harley would do that, I am unsure if the after market vent doors are exact replacements or if the aftermarket sellers will sell just the replacement door. Have considered having a local fabricator make me replacements from polished aluminum but figured that it would be cheaper to just buy new aftermarket fairings. The ABS cement works well depending on the break.

Nope. Used ABS cement from the hardware store to repair it. Have started removing them during the summer months when they stay open to reduce me kicking it and causing damage. Use the black ABS cement and you won’t be able to tell it was repaired depending on the amount of damage.

Mine were always rattling until one finally broke. Took them off and I don’t really miss them or the rattling.
